Some here have stuff with CD Baby, Spotify and other streaming sites. This blog explains it pretty well. Yet another wrinkle in modern music distribution that boggles the mind. I don't know what to make of this but it's certainly interesting.

I was working on new videos when I discovered my music is up automatically. No one I know has received any income from YouTube's action on this, thus I believe it to be illegal copyright infringement.

According to this blog (if true, what do I know?) any royalties from YT are supposed to come from the distro channel which in your case I think is CD Baby.

YT is Google, and they own who knows what and have deals all over the place. You would think that any views or streams from YT would also be some kind of credit back to the source but this is why I posted this. I have no clue. It's like what's in the fine print of all the agreements you signed and how is someone like yourself supposed to track all of this?

Right. It is confusing.

Further, I don't think any of us had in mind what YouTube has done when we signed up for CD distribution. Why would anyone buy tracks now, if they can just get them off YouTube for free? Google may have made a way for this to be legal, but it's a serious nail in the coffin of musicians who are not benefiting.

I've been fortunate in my career to play with the best in the world, but also to be able to do something else for a living. Stuff like this confirms the decision.

Joe, if you want to know more about how much damage YouTube is doing to composers, just find one of the articles by Grammy-winning band leader Maria Schneider.

Here are some. Not for the faint of musical heart:

I think the most interesting part of this poorly researched article is in the comments. This is one.

"As a CD Baby artist, if you’ve enrolled in our Sync Licensing program, your albums and singles will be delivered to YouTube Music Key. We will also deliver to YouTube high quality album art videos, or what YouTube is calling “Art Tracks,” which play audio while displaying an image of your album cover. These videos are available not only to Music Key subscribers, but also as ad-supported content accessible for free on YouTube.com. Ad revenue from these videos will work the same as any other video on YouTube. Revenue for streaming activity through YouTube Music Key will be paid to you by CD Baby, and you’ll be able to view details in the accounting section of your member account."

I believe that the problem of having their music stolen is much less of a threat for most artists than obscurity.

Well said, I agree 100%.

I make a little money from the CDBaby/Youtube connection, $17.09 to be exact as of today.

Not going to get rich from it, but I'm ok with that smile Exposure of any kind is a good thing.

Yeesh... Not for the faint of financial heart, either. Although, typically I'm more of a believer in this:

Although she has her point, I wonder where she was when Hollywood media conglomerates, per Rep Sonny Bono, was rewriting copyright law, producing some of the most audacious lawsuits in our history, such as the demand kids pay royalties on "Happy Birthday," even to the point of reporting how many other kids were in attendance.
You Tube is a development model on steroids. You Tube has made possible so many advances in producing, uploading, and displaying video. Meanwhile, the major media have not moved off the old model, which is, in a few words, exploitative of artists and patrons alike.
I'm not done...let's talk about the political impact.....
