I need to do some cropping on a video I did. Anyone know of a good video editor either free or inexpensive. Don't need anything fancy.

If you have WIndows XP, you have Windows Movie Maker - really not bad. Movie Maker is found by typing it into the Windows help and clicking on the little launch arrow in the single help document that pops up.

How are you going to use the end product - YouTube or other online video, burn to DVD, something else? This will determine the kind of quality and size of the final edited file.

I'm sure Graham (Furry) would have the right answer to this - he is forever making videos. I have used the above programmes and a few others but not extensively.

Why not send Graham a PM?

I use Virtualdub a lot, I find it much better than WMM. WMM has a nasty habit of locking up on me especially if I have a lot of edits going on but I like the timeline feature it has. From what I read on several video editing forums, I'm not the only one reporting that. If all you're doing is 2 or 3 edits, usually no problem but start chopping up a file a lot or creating a bunch of separate clips to later stitch together, Virtualdub is much better. Keep in mind that none of the freebies will handle all formats so it also depends on what you're working with.
Now you've got me thinking about this again so I just did a search and found this Top 5 free Interesting that Virtualdub is not mentioned and I've never heard of Wax or Zwei-Stein. I may have to check those out.

Can't find a way to do it in windows movie maker. And most of these others you have to produce the video using their software. I have a friend who says he can do it but I have to email it to him. Does anyone know of an email that allows you to send files over 26k. Mail.com and yahoo don't allow you to send that much and that is already in a zip format.

There are several free transfer sites like www.yousendit.com that will handle 1 gig or more. what did movie maker not do for you? did you explore www.videohelp.com ? if they can't solve it then i will be surprised.

I was using big file transfer but it was locking up all the time. Yousendit worked great.

I will check out that forum as well.

Thanks.

Not VirtualDub, it handles several different formats and it's irrelevant if you used it to produce the video or not. What exactly are you trying to do and most importantly, what video format are you working with or trying to work with? You're not by any chance trying to work with a .mov file are you? That's Apple and none of the freebies with work with that on a PC. You have to buy one of the big video suites like Vegas Studio or Adobe.

VirtualDub is good, just takes a long time processing.
Also has a very old interface, last I used it anyway

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

If both of you install the free Team Viewer (teamviewer.com), you can swap files of any size.

Ed needs to crop his video. It's not the same as cropping a photograph, and not all video editing software will offer this feature. I don't think any of the free ones do, although I may be mistaken. If worse comes to worst, put your video file on a dvd and mail it to your friend to edit for you.
