We use backing tracks for bass, drums and keyboards, but we don't buy commercial backing tracks; I make them all in my studio from scratch. I control playback from an iPod on my mic stand.
We play covers but they are all arranged by us in new ways, e.g. we do Human League's 'Don't You Want Me Baby' in a jazz/swing style and The Kinks' 'Waterloo Sunset' as a reggae. Audiences like the surprises!

I confess we didn't think of this one in bossa nova style; we pinched it from Diana Krall. Keeping those signature 'response' harmonies right to the end lends an interesting bit of tension I think.
