Joan, check out Best Buy and the Future shop. Lots of people using computers for this. I prefer my cable box/toshiba HDTV, and the big computer monitor is beside an HP media Vista system, which has a built in TV tuner I don't really use.
I also take care of my Mom's cable box/ recorder, she needs it cleaned out once a month, but they made that an arduous task.
There are cards and software packages you can add on to your computer to do this, but you'd need a big hard drive. My Mom's system records House and Days of our Lives, in case she falls asleep during the shows. Lots of options, like record every episode on every channel, to one time recording of a movie.
