Don't Let Me Cross Your Mind

The nostalgia of Janice and Bud's "Clint's Mandolin" prompted me to go to my MP3 archives and pull the dust off this original I recorded with my late brother Harold in 1984.

The Mp3 was made years ago at a low bit rate from a reel to reel recording so there were limited options to make this a decent recording but then it was already limited by my singing and playing. This update was done completely in BIAB using the stock plug ins. The MP3 audio track was gated to suppress tape hiss and a little reverb used to balance the audio track with the RealTracks. The bass and drums were compressed and the drums brightened a little with eq. The acoustic guitar was not treated with any plug in.

****** Song Summary *************

Charlie, It's great the way you can manipulate these old tracks and resurrect them. A good song and a good vocal. The steel is great. Harold was a very accomplished player. Those triplets are not easy to pull off. The mix sounds really good and considering the source material it is amazing that it is that good. Very much enjoyed! Tom

Charlie,

This is fantastic! You've really got the knack when it comes to using BIAB/RB to re-work previously recorded material. I cannot think of anyone else on the forum who has the same level as expertise as you.

I really enjoyed the listen. You and Harold have created a very engaging and very entertaining song. You both sound great. As I sat here listening and tapping my feet, I kept thinking "What a terrific tribute to your late brother" and "What a wonderful way to re-visit memories of yesteryear".

May Christmas bring all that's good your way,
Noel

Charlie,

There`s such a good-times feeling to this. Even without knowing the history, I can tell I`m listening in to a live home studio recording where the players are enjoying making music together.
Great and worthy work to revive this!

Charlie, great job of bringing an old track to life! Your brother Harold was working that pedal steel over ( which I love ). A lot of people don't realize the skill it takes to play one of those, you have to put your whole body into it to do it right, which I respect! Good work. Thanks, Torrey

Hi Tom. Such nice comments coming from as respected pedal steel player as you is very much appreciated. I was hoping you would have time to take a listen to this one and comment. I have quite a few of these recordings, both originals and covers, we made during one of his visits and he was not familiar at all with the original material. I also would lose track of where I was in the song during his solos getting caught up with where he was taking the song. A hint of this can be heard at the fast fade out of this particular track as I messed up just beyond the fade out portion. Thanks for you comments.

Thank you Noel. It took quite a few years before Harold would spend any time playing together with me. Most of my childhood I was a thorn in his side. In the end, he had a lot of faith in me and was very encouraging to get me to continue to write and record original music. I appreciate your comments.

Merry Christmas

Charlie

Hi torrey. A friend and I were laughing just a few days ago about the faces Harold would make when he was playing. The fun part was always his smile when he would nail a riff. I'm glad you enjoyed the post and appreciate you taking time to comment.

Charlie,

I had to copy both Tom and Noel - they said just what I was thinking. It is great what you are able to do to bring a recording like this "back".

You have done an incredible job of mixing the old and new - it all sounds "new" - cohesive. Harold's steel is a delight. Your vocal is excellent - strong and really well mixed. Worth many listens... Catchy song...

Do more of this! (Sneak one of those covers in - I'd love to hear that, too...)

Thanks Floyd. I appreciate you listening and commenting. Maybe I can do a YouTube video on one the covers and post the link here. Lot's of real traditional country stuff in the archives.

Tommy, Noel, floyd and others so well articulated what is so egaging about this tune. The obvious fact that y'all were having fun playing shines through every second of it.

The addition of the RTs works remarkably well. We have a lot of our old bluegrass projects for which I had the perseverance to take on as you did with this.

The mix sounds really good - you did a heckuva job. The vocal, the write and the steel are all standout. And what a tribute to your brother.

This will be a fine addition to our SC playlist and we are proud to have inadvertently played a tiny part in the stimulus for it!
