Quote: "Part of this could be the mic I guess. I'm using a Shure AXS 1 which sounds great, it's a dynamic mic that to me sounds cleaner than the venerable SM58. Maybe it's not sensitive enough to produce a strong signal when she's singing softly? Is there not a way to have RB internally boost an input that's being recorded in real time without clipping? I don't mean compression I mean a simple gain boost. As I said I could easily use 7 or 8db of boost and not clip so why does RB record it so low?"

Do your instruments record at acceptable levels? They are line level inputs. If they do, consider converting mic level to line level prior to input into the interface and input line level audio rather than mic level.

A mic preamp or channel strip will do the job nicely. One of your keyboards may have a mic input that outputs on a line out. Many amplifiers have line out. I prefer the preamp/channel strip the best.

Yeah, knowing the signal path of the Shure AXS - to - RB would be nice.
May be a simple matter of grabbing a decent mic pre like a VTB1 or something ..

/wow I just Googled the VTB1 .. from memory it seems to have gone up little over time instead of down. Tells ya something about supply/demand. I should probably get another one.
The $2400 keyboard suggestion I made for a Christmas present didn't go over well, but a $175 mic pre just may fly .. <grin>

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I totally understand how things can get overlooked in these threads. I said earlier that I discovered my Sonic Cell that I was using as an interface doesn't work with Win 10 so I picked up a Steinberg UR22 Mk11. The signal path is simple, Shure mic into the interface, USB into the PC. It has an input trim knob on the front. It also has a software disc that I can't install because my new system has no DVD drive but I think I can download it and install that way. That might include a mixer that could boost the input gain and the headphone output, not sure.
