My last song post of the year goes out with a big Thank You! to those who have taken the time to listen and/or give feedback to my creations this year - you have rescued me from trying to figure out if my stuff is working from the squawks of the birds around the house.
This song was a kind of exercise I did when first starting to write;
take the chords of I song I liked, ( in this case the late, great John Martyn`s May You Never ), write my own lyrics, keeping the feel of the song that inspired them... and see where it went.

Key=D , Tempo 112, Length (m:s)=3:38
2 bar intro, 96 bar chorus, from bar 3 to bar 98. Repeat x1 chorus
No Melody
No Soloist track.
Song is saved with Volume, Pan, Reverb, Chorus, Bank0,
Style is _SMILES.STY (Smiles Upbeat Train Fingerstyle)

RealTracks in style: 2421:Bass, Acoustic, RockabillySlapBoomChicka Ev16 100
RealTracks in style: ~1437:Piano, Electric, Rhythm JazzFunkGroovin Ev16 110

If

if your biggest secret should be told
may your greatest gift allow
a smile for the judge
and no tears for the crowd

if you play the fool for a raging bull
may you find a friendly gate
where you stand your ground
the other side of hate

you`re such a sweet soul
you`re the fire to my coal
and I`m leaving you way too soon
I never learned to cook
there`s no time to write a book
so I`ll leave you with this tune

and if the worst comes to be
may life do for thee
what your guitar does for my poetry
and spring does for the cherry tree

if push comes to shove on the dance floor of love
may you never miss a beat
you win or you lose
but you land on your feet

and if your greatest misfortune be to wake monday morning
after two days of rain
may your umbrella of song
open the same

you`re such a sweet soul
you`re the fire to my coal
and I`m leaving you way too soon
I never learned to cook
there`s no time to write a book
so I`ll leave you with this tune

and if the worst comes to be
may life do for thee
what your guitar does for my poetry
and spring does for the cherry tree

I'd not heard of John Martyn before so I shot over to Youtube to give your reference song a listen.

Both songs are interesting and unusual. I preferred your song over his.

Enjoyed my listen.

Thanks for your listen, Charlie.
I`ve added a link to the John Martyn song for those who aren`t familiar- his early work was really good but never made waves outside UK. We`d sit around singing his songs along with Neil,Dylan & Donovan... Clapton had a minor hit with this one.

Robert - that is impressive stuff for "when first starting to write"...

The BAND works well for this... the organ is nice and the dobro was a good addition. And this is well mixed.

Enjoyed it. (Also enjoyed hearing your inspiration)

Floyd,

Maybe it helped that I was a wannabe songwriter for a lot of years before I knuckled down to learn enough guitar to find the chords for the tunes in my head... no magic chord wizard back then!
Many thanks for your listen and comments.

Robert, good work!! you have a talent for interesting lyrics and putting them in an entertaining musical vehicle! For some reason I was reminded of Don Mclean on this one. Thanks, Torrey.

May You Never is one of my favourite songs liked both the Martyn & Clapton cover.
Sounds like the exercise worked - nicely done - a really good listen.

Robert,

A smart idea to take the chords of an existing song and create something new with it. Commercially speaking, that is allowed since chordprogressions are not copyrighted ;-)
I'm always struck by the drama in your voice, which is very cool.
Good work, looking forward to hearing more in the new year.

Rob

floyd has already quoted this...but, hey, we gonna do it also! Nice.

We've enjoyed your music and look forward to more during the New Year.

This was a great way to close the year. Strong write, vocal, and arrangement
wrapped up in a mix that sounds really good on our monitors.

Kudos!!

Peter,
I wondered if I`d find another John Martyn fan by posting this and happy you found something likeable in my take on his one hit.

Rob & Anne-Marie,
Wow, I`m really happy you like the vocals... recording better vocals is one area I want to improve this year.
I`m not entirely sure I used the same chords as on the JM song... I didn`t know very many when I tried to work them out!
