As Charlie said, I'd also not heard of John Martyn before and I also shot over to Youtube to give your reference song a listen. Both songs are interesting and unusual. I preferred your song over his.
And I agree with you.
It is a very good exercise to follow the styles of favorite musicians.
Sometimes I also borrow the chord progressions of my favorite songs.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

John Martyn, like just about all of the British folk artists of the late 60`s - 70`s (apart from Donovan) remains almost unknown outside the UK. I guess its an acquired taste, but I`ll probably reference a few others in future songs as they were my biggest influence.
