A bit of music trivia on the Buddy Holly crash:
The late Country Artist, Waylon Jennings, gave up his seat on that small plane to JP Richardson ( aka The Big Bopper ). Waylon was Buddy's bass player in The Crickets.

A bit of music trivia on the Buddy Holly crash:
The late Country Artist, Waylon Jennings, gave up his seat on that small plane to JP Richardson ( aka The Big Bopper ). Waylon was Buddy's bass player in The Crickets.
Donny Almost true  Waylon Jennings was indeed Buddy Holly's bass player at the time of the crash, but he was never a member of the Crickets. Buddy Holly had split from the Crickets by then, but they (Joe Mauldin on Bass, Jerry Allison on Drums) retained the name "The Crickets". Holly was touring under his own name at the time of the crash.

Waylon's seat was given out based on the results of a coin flip which Waylon lost (or won based on subsequent events). Waylon jokingly said something like "I hope the plane crashes and you get killed". The statement bothered Jennings for the rest of his life.

KeithS, Yes, Waylon regretted that statement for the rest of his ( Waylon's ) life. I'm trying to find a great group interview where Waylon discusses the airplane crash.
