The late Country Artist, Waylon Jennings, gave up his seat on that small plane to JP Richardson ( aka The Big Bopper ). Waylon was Buddy's bass player in The Crickets.

Waylon Jennings was indeed Buddy Holly's bass player at the time of the crash, but he was never a member of the Crickets.

Buddy Holly had split from the Crickets by then, but they (Joe Mauldin on Bass, Jerry Allison on Drums) retained the name "The Crickets". Holly was touring under his own name at the time of the crash.
