A RealTracks update is available for Band-in-a-Box 2017Download the RealTracks updateThis patch includes updates for RealTracks released with Band-in-a-Box 2017. A separate 'Audiophile' edition patch is not required. Summary of changes (Dec 13, 2016): - Fixed: Some incorrect set numbers listed in RealDrums and RealTracks Picker.
- Fixed: Some incorrectly named RealTracks Demos folders.
- Added: Missing Shots and Holds files.
- Fixed: Many of the song demos from the sets of 202 New RealTracks (also _CASUALE from the "Rediscovered" bonus), have been updated to add missing memos and to fix some problems with chord progressions.
- Fixed: Many style demos have been improved with memos to describe the style and song.
- Fixed: Several songs demos are fixed to remove unneeded frozen tracks.
- Fixed: _BYNIGHT, _GOGETER, _SONGBRD and _THOUGHT song-generation issues.

Is there a definitive way to know if one has this update?
I buy my update each year around December 29 or 30. For 2 reasons..
1) it is my Christmas - because it is really the only thing I want each year (my wife wraps last year's box, then a few days later, I order it) and....
2) I prefer to wait until things "shake out" a bit and settle down (patches, fixes, updates).
In the past, my drive has arrived with the most recent version. This year it was a couple behind - it came with 453 when 456 had been released...
So... I am wondering if I need this RealTracks update or not.
Is there a way to tell?

I suggest that you download and install it to be sure, there is no harm in doing that. You will also want to install the latest Band-in-a-Box build patch. We try to ship a very stable version on the hard drives, so it often lags the recent build available in a download patch.

Each year I go through a similar deal of what Floyd Jane posted. I wait until late in the month to order, hoping that all bugs and fixes will be included. I don’t have the need or drive to be first in line on December 1. Got plenty to do in the meantime. However, I try to update with any new patches whenever released. When new versions of BIAB appear, I enjoy reading the early bird reviews, comments, demo videos, etc. before making the plunge.

There is an "update" feature inside of BIAB, right? Does this also patch the Real Tracks?
