For various reasons, I hadn't updated BiaB since the 2012.5 release, even though I had purchased every release (EverythingPAK) since. I finally updated each BiaB release, one at a time, playing a bit with each version to get used to the changes. I had no problems until I installed 2017. With 2017, any of my songs that contain SampleTank voices no longer play those voices, but instead, sound like BiaB has substituted the equivalent GM voice playing thru my default MIDI (Coyote WT) soft synth. When I look at the mixer, instead of showing tyhe SampleTank HQ voice I originally chose, it now shows a voice with the exact same naming, except it includes the word "Sforzando" in it. Also, when I attempt to assign a SampleTank (H1Q) voice to a track, the list of Hi-Q MIDI patches shows every patch listed twice, once with the word "SampleTank" in it and once more withe the word "Sforzando" in it. And if I select the "SampleTank" one, it has no effect in that it still shows the "Sforzando" one in the mixer. And the sound that is played sounds exactly the same as it would if I selected the equivalent GM patch and played it thru my default Coyote WT soft synth. How do I get back the SampleTank sounds I used to get?

Ansmith,
Can you please post a link to one of the affected backings so that we can download it and give it a test run to see what is happening first-hand and to experiment with possible solutions?
Regards, Noel

BIAB 2017 no longer calls up the default Sampletank DXi for Sampletank HI-Q sounds. With BIAB 2017 the default are SFZ HI-Q sounds which invoke/call up the, free and provided, Sforzando (a SFZ player).
Couple options here:
If you want to, or have to, use the Sampletank HI-Q sounds on each track that had them before you will have to insert Sampletank, either as VSTi or DXi (highly recommend using the VSTi over DXi - less issues), for each existing track that uses ST HI-Q instruments. Then save song (Save Special - w patches)
Or simply switch the HI-Q instrument(s) in your songs from Sampletank to the newer Sforzando - and again re-save songs.
I've listened to the ST HI-Q and SFZ HI-Q BIAB sounds, side by side, they are identical (e.g. the ST2 HI-Q: "Bass, Electric, 61 Classic Sampletank" calls up the same sound (except in Sampletank's .stw format) as the Sforzando: "Bass, Electric, 61 Classic - Sforzando" sound (but in SFZ format). There MIGHT be a slight volume delta (with the SFZ's being louder by a bit)
If you are getting bad or low quality sounding HI-Q sounds when you try to use Sforzndo HI-Q's it might be an install issue.
There was some initial thrashing when folks, inclduing me, updated to 2017 but choose to not install the supplied Sforzando during the BIAB install process, etc.
Probably just need some a reinstall to verify you installed Sforzando during the BIAB 2017 install - only takes a few minutes and doesn't hurt anything. Then there is the clean up to get rid of the old ST HI-q files from the DX Settings folder . There is a way to make BIAB NOT see the old ST versions when you ask to use a HI-Q instrument WITHOUT you having to do any file "sleuthing around" in the DX Settings folder and deleting - but I forget how.

Larry,
Thanks for your answer. It's very clear - though it doesn't make me happy!
I am an all RealTracks user, but, in my library of approx 300 songs, I have occasionally (about 40 songs) used a MIDI voice for selected measures to get a particular sound I can't achieve with RealTracks. I always used Roland's VSC DXi - until Windows 7 came out. I ended up spending weeks going thru my library to find the songs with MIDI (they're now documented in my library list) and altered them to either use Coyote WT or SampleTank, whichever sounded better, modifying the volume on those measures as needed to get as close to the original Roland sound as possible.
Now I need to either alter those songs to continue to use SampleTank plug-in or use Sforzando...... and, of course, my concern is, what's the chance that either of those two might change/go away in the future?
Oh, well. Sorry about the b....in'. For now, I'm going to try and use the SampleTank 2.x VSTi as a plug-in.
However, my 1st problem/issue just cropped up - when I select SampleTank 2.x VSTi in the 1st plug-in slot for the track, I get "This copy of SampleTank is not authorized - the 10-day grace period has expired - run the 1K Multimedia Authorization Manager".
I have been using SampleTank (the "free" component that came with BiaB)since it was added to BiaB years ago. I authorized it then and have never been asked to do it again 'til now.
What do I do? How do I authorize it?
Andy

go back to your IK multimedia account - you should still have Sampletank free listed as a product you own. Download the newest authorization manger and re-authorize it (there will be serial numbers in your account for it) http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/authorizationmanager/For you serial number go to IK Support -> User area -> My Products and look for it if you used up all "authorizations" just ask IK for more - they ALWAYS seem to give you more. good luck Larry PS: I think if you switched to the SFZ HI-Q sounds and NOT the ST version of the HQ sounds you will have fewer problems in future, IMHO. The free SFZ player, SForzando, has been around a while and is the GUTS of Garrtian's sound player. I doubt PG will have occasion to change it again - just my 2 cents

I'd feel better if someone at PG, like Andrew, confirmed everything I told you re: who new SFZ is implemented and and how to switch out (or not) older ST HI-Q sounds with the Sforzando HI-q sounds You realize I'm just a forum member - not a PG employee (?) Good luck maybe some one from PG will pop-in here, or some other forum member will confirm what I said (two wrong answers = one big wrong answer - ) Larry

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
