Dread

when stone eyes hide their fires
and I turn from what I saw
on the six o`clock sound bite
from the furnace of war
melt my core

there she sits in the rubble
on the poisoned river bank
Michelangelo`s madonna
holding her broken man
the glass spills its sand

and I fence out the darkness
camped behind bright lights in their eyes
diplomats sip their wine
as another desert flower dies
in dreams I try

to take a boat and by the compass moon
carry the refugee to my room

when stone eyes hide their fires
and I refuse to look
when the stars turn to shrapnel
and my lord tires of his water walk
is it all just talk

teach me to live that I may dread
the grave no more than my bed
