I think the thing that gets me with the Windows 7 upgrade is that it's rush to release was because of the debacle that was and still is (to some extent) Windows Vista; yet people like me, who purchased (although I admit I got a deal through HP) Vista Ultimate pay the exact same upgrade price for Ultimate as someone that is upgrading from Vista Home to Vista Ultimate. Or, looking at it another way, value-wise, why does the Ultimate upgrade (especially if I'm going from Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate) cost more than any of the other upgrades?
I like PGMusic's grid for upgrades much better. I think it's a better, customer-oriented model.

I bought Vista not too long ago and to be honest,I have not had any problems with it.
I to read the horror stories and tales of this won't work and that won't run.
It makes me wonder just how Computer Literate these people are,as a lot if not all
their problems are self inflicted,caused by not doing enough research before diving
in and hoping it will be OK.
Regarding upgrading to Win 7,I have yet to hear a reason why it would be an improvement
over Vista,except maybe the 64 bit install being touted as the be all and end all of the muso's.
I also read that Win 7 does not have an Internet Browser?
I don't know whether this is correct or not but,If so why not,do I really have to get Firefox
and start another learning curve.
It's bad enough I have to do a clean install on a newly formatted drive,why?
Is it worth it?

The European version (Windows 7E) doesn't have the Internet Explorer browser, because of the law suit a few years ago between M$ and European courts. So to comply with the ruling, they have decoupled IE from the O/S (which of course means they can do it).
I didn't have any problems with Vista, per se, once the service packs came out, but the original version was a pain. And it really wasn't geared toward music production. It became better once the sound card vendors provided better drivers for Vista compatibility.
I'm not unhappy with my Vista now; I just don't think it's fair that the trade-in value on my Cadillac Vista will be the same as someone else's trade-in value for their Yugo Vista.
It gives me pause as to whether I'll upgrade now or wait.
As far as IE, I'm pretty sure you can download it and install it separately. It's just not included out of the box for European versions.
As far as doing clean installs, I would do it anyway. That will start out with a clean registry and make sure no extraneous stuff is potentially interfering with Windows 7.

The saying now is that the European version of Windows 7 does not come with no Internet Explorer, it rather comes with quite a bunch of browser brands to choose from.

Back to John's post about Windows 7 being "rushed to release", I don't agree (and I generally do agree with John). Yes, Windows 7 was made to correct most of the annoyances of Vista, but it has been tested far longer than prior OS releases from Microsoft. Beta testing started last February or so. I've had the release candidate running since May and that was a month or so after it became available. I've been using the final release version for several weeks and already received the normal Tuesday night updates from Microsoft . The version shipping tomorrow was finalized in July so it could go to the OEMs to put it on PCs and have them ready to sell tomorrow. This may be the smoothest roll-out of an OS from Microsoft ever. Let's hope, anyway.
Guitarman, John is right about the browser. My USA version did have Internet Explorer 8 as part of the regular full install.
The only thing I've done to the OS so far is deactivate Windows Media Player's phoning home and checking the Internet.

Hi, Matt -
"Rushed to release" is probably the wrong phrase; how about "greatly accelerated schedule". As I recall, Win7 was originally to be released in 2010, but after Vista had so many issues and folks didn't take to it, Microsoft decided to speed up development and here's Win7 less than two years later. Most people really only used Vista because their new machines came with it, but check the vendor discussion boards to see how many people downgraded back to XP. Also, check the vendor discussion boards to see the number of problems folks have had, especially those using Vista to make music.
Once I got SP2 for Vista installed, my system is pretty stable now and I have very few problems.
Also, I wasn't implying at all that Win7 wasn't tested well, nor was I implying that it's not stable. Comments here and elsewhere indicate that it is very stable, and so it really is what Vista should have been (but wasn't) in the first place.
I just feel like I'm paying for a brand new full operating system, not an upgrade. If I want to go from Vista Ultimate to Win7 Ultimate, it will cost on the order of $219. That's the same price it will cost someone to upgrade from Vista Home to Win7 Ultimate. In contrast, the Apple folks got to pay $29 to go to Snow Leopard. I could live with that.
I'm just griping mildly among friends here. I don't want to start an O/S war or generate any flaming. I just wanted to get it off my chest. I hope folks take it that way.

That is more clear. I can't disagree with anything you just said, John. It is surprising to realize Vista was only introduced two years ago. Seems like a lot longer, with all the difficulties people have been through. Griping is an appropriate description.
However, my guitarist is right now wrestling with devices that are broken from that $29 upgrade to Snow Leopard, so they get to have fun sometimes, too.
