I want to play a chord on my Keyboard connected to my DAW and have have it sustain until I say stop ( verbal is not necessary )
This is for practice only - play a C bass on Keyboard, then run the modes on my guitar while the C base sustains...
Just to clarify, not the normal piano keyboard sustain pedal which lets the chord "ring out", but I want to turn the notes on, and have them stay on until I turn them off. Like when something goes wrong with a midi file and the notes get stuck...
Dan, you will either have to add a sustain pedal to your keyboard or and the MIDI command CC64 set to 127 at the start of your track to start the sustain and a CC64 set to 0 when you want to stop the sustain. To manually add these settings you will need to use the MIDI editor or the Piano roll view.
Many MIDI control keyboards have assignable sliders and knobs. If you have one then assign a slider to CC64. That way all the way up would be sustain on and all the way down would be sustain off. This is better than manually setting the sustain as you can do it live, as you can with a sustain pedal.
More detail: CC64 settings of 0-63 means sustain off and 64 to 127 mean sustain on. I just like the pedal/slider all the way up or down.

Thanks... I can go out today to local guitar shop and get something. But just to clarify, if I click it or push it down, will it keep the chord "held" until I click it again or push it up? I need it to not let the notes turn off. Will they have a pedel for that which I plug into the sustain input jack.
By the way, here is my keyboard. I have often thought of upgrading (I have had this for decades - one piece of gear which has lasted longer than any other), but I never needed one to do anything more. Maybe now is the time?
how about looping the chord in the daw spacebar to start\stop if this is acceptable you could onetime only a series of different chords to proctive different modes in one file

Ya, Mike I have lots of capability to loop things, but I wanted the more held effect for practice. but you got me thinking, I wounder if this would work?
I have so much old gear, you would think I had something in the closet to make this work?
Unforturnately, looks like this may not be working in Win 10. It was in the closet for a long time. I did like it when it worked.

You would have to keep your foot on the pedal to keep the sustain. However a brick or C-clamp would work in your situation.
Yes. Any sustain pedal would work. About 20 years ago some pedals were wired differently so they worked in reverse on some keyboards, proprietary BS. If they don't have a sustain pedal that matches your keyboard don't worry. Sustain pedals only have two wires, hot and ground. If the pedal works opposite just switch the wires. Depending on how the plug is you may have to cut the cord to reverse it. I bought the cheapest sustain pedal about 20 years ago and it is still working just fine. In fact JonD bought his about the same time and it is working just fine also.
An after thought: If you play a chord into BiaB or a DAW why not just go to the piano roll view and extend those notes out for 5 minutes or so. Use a real slow tempo (tempo doesn't matter) to help extend the time. This will accomplish exactly the thing as a sustain pedal or a loop. You could accomplish what Mike was saying also this way. Plus it will cost you nothing but a little time.

Lookie what I found in the closet! (25 years of stuff in there)
But it only works like a typical sustain pedal on a piano. It does not sustain forever.
Let me clarify how I have things configured. My Keyboard is connected to my MOTU which is connected to my computer. The sustain pedal is plugged into the sustain input on back of the keyboard. OK that is the easy stuff.
In order to play the sounds I open EZKeys, select one of the piano patches and all plays fine. The sustain pedal actually is illustrated on the computer piano image and activates when I step on it. But only works like a typical piano sustain pedal.
So how best to set up for the infinite sustain I am looking for?
Almost there. I switched workflow. Opened Reaper - put ST3 on a track and played a piano patch. No difference there. BUT when I switched to an Organ Patch I got my infinite sustain. So the patch appears a part of the equation.
OK, look in the MIDI editor and tell me what numbers you see. It should be greater than 63 for sustain and less then 64 for no sustain.
If you are trying this on a piano it will only work for the duration of the piano sound. Some sounds, like a piano, has a natural decay and the sustain pedal will extend but no eliminate that decay. Try using the sustain pedal on an organ, preferably a Hammond patch. Hammonds and other organs do not have a natural decay so they will sustain forever.
Let me know how you make out.

Dan, A piano patch will die off, just like if you hit the piano keys and held the pedal down. Eventually the sound dies off. Use a Sine wav sample (or the Organ you mentioned) which loops forever. The patch/sound has to be originally designed to hold and hold and hold .. pianos are not designed for this.
/OK now I see Mario and I both told you the same thing .. that's how it works

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!
I don't know where to look to see the sustaim number, but of course you are correct with the natural decay of the piano. I have found several other patches in ST3 which don't have this limitation. I actually am listening to a group of cellos which sound fantastic to play my modes over. So all is looking up. Thanks again for all you help here.
Hey Rharv better late than never, Thanks for the confirmation. All is good now and I am learning bunches about this stuff. The forum and its members are one heck of a resource.
Yes, choose an instrument that doesn't have a natural decay. If you get sick of the B3, Brass or woodwind would work here also.

OMG, at the end of the day somehow, someway, I accidentally disconnect my MOTU USB cable!! 90 minutes of reinstalling everything I could think of before I found the disconnected cable. And here is the kicker, this ain't the first time this has happened.
Can't he just change the polarity switch on his sustain pedal?
Maybe, but a brick is much easier

There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound!
