I bought Session Horns several years ago and never really used it because the computer I had at the time was not beefy enough to run it. Now that I have something with more horsepower, I recently tried to install it on the new computer... full install, freshly downloaded from the web site, and activated with my original code. So far so good.

But every time I open any of the DAWS on my system, after they search the plugin directories, I get a message along the lines of "An important part of the installation is missing... please reinstall..."

When I click OK, the message returns a bunch of times, until finally it stops.

Anybody have an idea what might cause this? I downloaded everything that was available from my account's download area, and installed it. I can't imagine what could be missing.

Pat, have you tried to open the library directly from within the Kontakt stand-alone to make sure it knows where the audio content is to be found.

Also, I presume you ran the Native Instruments Service Center to make sure everything is properly authorized and to see if there are any updates to either the library or Kontakt. Also, I suspect that you may need to run Service Center as an administrator, since it will write information to the registry.

I would definitely try loading it standalone first, before accessing it via the VSTi DLL. You could also try to load the Kontakt DLL from RealBand (since it doesn't scan all the files, but requires you to explicitly select it) and see what kind of error you get there.

Don't know if you've already tried those things or not.

I don't know the product (I play this product on TV) but I wonder if it might be a Windows compatibility issue. If it requires Windows 7 and you now have 10 etc. if so, run the installer in compatibility mode.

I don't think the OS is the problem, as I have Session Horns (as part of the Kontakt Komplete pack) on both my Windows 7 laptop and my Windows 10 desktop.

However, Session Horns is just a library used within Kontakt, so if the VSTi scanning is failing, it would seem to be more of a Kontakt issue rather than Session Horns itself, as the DAW scanner doesn't scan the specific libraries loaded by Kontakt, just the Kontakt DLL itself.

I know when you install, it asks where to install the Session Horns (C: drive), the library sound files (which can be a different drive), and the 64-bit and the 32-bit DLL's. I believe if it has been previously installed, it uses those previous paths, but I'm just going from memory here.

That's why I'd first try using the Kontakt stand-alone first.

I can't remember if Session Horns came with the full Kontakt or just the Kontakt player, however. If just the player, you may want to consider upgrading to the full Kontakt.

I'm not sure, but I think when I bought it, it came with the full Kontakt engine. It was over $200 at that time... now they offer a stripped down version for $99 ... it might come with just the player.

But dagnabbit! I paid for a good product, and I don't want to buy anything else in order to use it!

In response to the previous posts.. I haven't tried any of those things yet. Thanks for the ideas. I've reached an age where it doesn't take much of an obstacle to bog me down. ;-)

John brought up a good point I always play new patches in Kontakt stand-a-lone mode. If it works there it should work in a DAW, at least it always works in my Sonar.

Also what version of Kontakt are you using? Session Horns require either Kontakt player 5 or Kontakt 5. If you have Kontakt 2,3, or 4 it will not work.

Kontakt costs around $400 USD so you must have gotten the free Kontakt Player.

PS -Don't pay $400, wait for a sale!
