Sorry for originally posting in the wrong forum and thanks to Mac and others that responded. Ihave tried following everything recommended plus everything in the documentation without success. My pat file from BB works in BB fine as well as Sonar. It converts without errors in RB. It is recognized in RB but the patches list is empty. I have reinstalled configuration files many time. Customer support confirmed the same problem using the the same file from this forum and hopefully will continue their efforts. Any one else with this issue? No errors but an empty patch list. Any ideas would be appreciated. having used BB and sonars synths for years I am now sold on both real band and my RD 700 plus real track - but can't get RB to communicate with the RD. The RD is fine with GM but that kind of misses the points. The problem appears to be with either the original definition from this forum or the wat it is converted for RB. HELP!

I didn't read your original post so I'm shooting in the dark here. I had problems with my synth definition when moving from BIAB to RB. I assume you read the Patches configuration file in the RB directory. The problem I had was that the lower banks had to be defined BEFORE the upper banks. Below is an excerpt from the file that eventually worked. Also, note the use of commas rather than periods.

1=Concert Grand 2
2=Modern Piano
3=Electric Grand
.
.
.
1,95,16=Concert Grand
1,95,17=Studio Grand
1,95,18=Mellow Grand

Thanks for your help Rachel,
The problem appears to be that RB does not recognize the upper banks. I have made test files.pat and only the lower banks work. I used your erxample as a model. By the way even if your original file has periods in it the conversion utility seems to convert them to commas. Tech support has assigned this to a senior tech to come up with a solution. The only thing I haven't tried is some other instrument defs just to see if any will work on my system.

Have you tried removing the comments section (all lines with a semicolon) and the "favorites" listing that is at the top of the PAT file?

These two things are supported in BiaB, but may not be in RB. For one thing the favorites section breaks the convention Rachel alluded to (having lower numbers first)

Also remove the expansion card list at the bottom

Thanks - I tried this when I made a small file with only 4-5 entries. Something appears to block any patches over 128. Even if I manually type a higher bank it is blocked?

There's an xv 88 group over at yahoo groups, seems very active and someone there might have a handle on this issue. I'm interested in the solution since our church has the same KB and we might want to do the same as you, Wyndham

If you tried this with only a few patches, and higher banks are blocked, something is amiss with the way it is written.

I made a patch file for the Juno-G (another Roland) maybe looking at that one in an editor will help you figure it out ... higher banks work fine in that one.

Hello,

It sounds like there isn't a default bank in your patch list. This is a list of patches that don't have higher banks. Here is an example. You could add this to your patches.ini if you want to see it.

Compare this patch list

Quote:

[Example1]

;This is the "default bank"
1=Piano
2=Guitar

;These are the "variations" (patches on higher banks)
1,2,8=Electric Piano
2,2,8=Electric Guitar

with this one:

Quote:

[Example2]

1=Piano

1,2,8=Electric Piano
2,2,8=Electric Guitar

First, go to Options | patch names and make sure "numeric" isn't selected.

Then, open the Patch Select dialog. Select the "Example1" patch list if not selected. Also, check the "Always show Bank 0 names" checkbox. In the main list box, you'll see Piano and Guitar. If you click on Piano, then look in the "variations" list box, you'll see both Piano and Electric Piano - these are all the patches that have the same program# 1, but different bank numbers. If you click on Guitar in the left box, you'll then see Guitar and Electric Guitar in the right-hand box.

If you instead uncheck the "Always show bank 0 names" box, and choose Electric Piano in the right-hand box, you'll see Electric Piano and Electric Guitar in the left-hand box, that is all of the patches that have the same bank number but different program#.

Now look at the Example2 patch list. You'll see that the only way you are able to select the Electric Guitar, is to choose Electric Piano and uncheck the "Always show bank 0" checkbox.

Just to be sure, you should know that you don't need to use a patch map to be able to access higher banks on your synth. If you want, you can simply select those numbers by right-clicking on the track and choosing the correct Program, Bank MSB, and Bank LSB from the menus. Or you could just type those numbers in using the Classic Tracks window.

Can you describe what you mean by patches over 128, manually typing them in, and being blocked?

Placing the default instruments before the higher banks makes this work with the settings Andrew gave. The only way to know exactly where to place them was by looking at the examples. I originally thought that the GM definitions already present in the pat file covered this but now know otherwise.

This is not a simple conversion process as suggested in the documnetation - it would be good to let users know this. Now the work really begins because there are no exact files for RD 700 SX only the original and GX. When/if I get it done I will submit to the group.

Also entering the patches manually with MSB and LSB is a good temporary solution but awkward since the dialogue closes before all three peices of info are entered.

Also please pass this along to tech support so they know that the issue is resolved for my purposes.

Thanks to Andrew and al the forum members that helped resolve this challenge.
