This will work anywhere in a song. Slowing down an intro to a song in the same manner is also an effective technique. slow the song into a rest - then return to the normal tempo after the rest. It also works to slow the song into a rest just before a chorus.

I've also found it effective to use in a measure that has 4 chord changes in the measure, in what I would consider a walk up or walk down phrase, for instance G/F/EM/G. Slowing this measure down keeps the phrase from sounding rushed and jerky - thus more musical. It takes a bit of experimentation to get sounding just right, but is certainly worth the effort.
