There is a lot of failure possibilities including: hard drive disconnected from the IDE connector inside the external hard drive case, hard drive is bad, IDE to USB board in the hard drive case is bad, defective cabling, not enough power is being delivered to the hard drive case for the hard drive to work and bad USB ports.

From your post I assume you've tried the external hard drive on multiple USB ports and computers, is that correct?

Are you plugging in the external hard drive cable hot, while the computer is powered up? Have you tried connecting the cable and then powering up the computer?

Does the external hard drive LED ever light up? When or if it does, does the LED flicker or stay on solid?
