I've done a similar workaround in the past, but I write-protect the file. That way I'm forced to do a "save-as" and not inadvertently overwrite my "template".

That also lets you double click on the file from Windows Explorer and automatically load it.

However, a better solution would be to allow saving various selectable configurations, with one of them specified as the default (that you can change).
