Just got 2017 and am having quite a few issues - an example- I bring up an existing song - cut several bars - save it with a new title - and regenerate - chord page shows the changes, but it still plays the old version. Also, if I'm using a quartet, say JAZFRED - and I change the guitar RT, it does not save/use this new choice. Am I missing something here?

Hi Pooch,
Expand the mixer to expose the audio track and either Mute the audio track or look at the audio track VU meters to see if the VU meters are displaying audio volume changes. Do the same for the solo or melody tracks (assuming you are not using solo and melody as instrument tracks). You may have an audio file loading and playing. This is most common when an audio file has the same name as the song project.
Also, what version did you upgrade from? There might be an operational difference between "the version you use to have" and 2017.

Right. If it isn't an audio file playing, then this sounds like you may be playing a song with frozen tracks. They would not reflect the changes you made.
When you change a RealTrack in a predefined style, save that style as a new name.

Tracks are NOT frozen - when I use a 'combo' it's an audio file (all tracks merged - and cannot change individual RT, correct?) so when I edit a song that uses an audio file, I need to re-name the audio file ? How is that done?
This is an upgrade from 2012.
Thanks.

... snip ... when I use a 'combo' it's an audio file (all tracks merged - and cannot change individual RT, correct?) Thanks. No, a combo is a group of instrument patches. Each instrument patch is loaded to its own individual track. You can confirm this by expanding the mixer and viewing the patch names on each track. You can change the instrument patch to any track. From 2012 to 2017 is quite the jump. The interface is very different. Make sure to remember the key combination "CNTRL + T" so you can switch between the expanded chord sheet view and icon view as needed. You might want to go through the release video highlights for 2013 to 2017 to kind of refresh yourself about how the program has changed over the five year interval. There are operational differences, enhanced program capability and new features to explore. Once you get accustomed to the changes, I think you're going to enjoy the program enhancements, changes and improvements. I much prefer the present interface and program stability to the way it was in 2011 when I first returned to Band-in-a-Box.

OK - so if a song is using a 'combo/audio file' - and say I want to use a different guitar style, I have to mute the audio and actually choose new styles for ALL the instruments? Otherwise, the 'old' guitar will still play on the audio file as well as the newly chosen one... if that's the case, then any 'real combo' styles I choose I would have to do that ?

Hi Pooch. A combo is not simply an audio file. It is a selection of individual instruments that can be midi, super midi, a combination of RealTracks and midi, a combination of RealTracks and supermidi, or all RealTracks. RealTracks are audio files. Regardless of what different combination instruments or midi/supermidi/RealTracks is - the combination of instruments is called a style.
Every style, regardless of its makeup, can be modified by replacing any instrument with any other instrument you choose. In other words, you do not have to replace a guitar with another guitar. You can choose any instrument. It doesn't even have to be a stringed instrument, it could be a piano, accordion, trumpet or Sax. You can create and save your own combo from scratch if you want to.
Knowing and understanding the concept of styles in BIAB will greatly enhance your benefits and fun. With BIAB, you can easily enter chords, select a tempo and time signature and choose from the thousands of available styles and have your song playing in 2-3 minutes with a complete band for backing tracks. You can easily replace instruments of a style with other instruments and make your own custom style for your song. Knowing the difference between even and swing styles is important as well as the difference between 8th notes and 16ths. But, you may find that an even 16th soloist guitar is perfect for your swing 8th song. The rules are not hard and fast.
You can spend a lot of time searching the hundreds of available instruments that may be midi, supermidi aor Real instruments to find the perfect instrument for your track. Knowing and understanding about the RealTrack Picker and Style Picker can help a lot in filtering your search down to a manageable level.

I attempted to provide you a bit of definitions of BIAB terms before jumping to answer your specific question. To answer your questions: * According to how you search for a replacement guitar will determine what you hear. If you search using the Realtrack Picker, you can hear the instrument solo'd or included in a demo song. * If you search for a replacement guitar using the Style Picker, you also can hear the instrument solo'd or included in a demo song. But in addition to the standard options, using the Style Picker in BIAB, you can also hear another style playing over your chord progression. This advanced feature provides several cool benefits. First, you hear your song in a completely different style without altering your existing song or style. Another benefit, that I consider an advanced and efficient benefit, is you can audition a style and hear how another instrument (in this example, a guitar) will sound over your chord progression. And here is where the fun begins. As an example, say your current song is using the style 'Sparrow'. This style includes a RealTrack - RT692 played by Jason Roller. You can filter a search in the RealTracks Picker for Jason Roller. In my version of BIAB, this search yielded 63 total "Jason Roller" results, 5 of the results were mandolins so I've reduced my guitar search down to 58. Very manageable. The descriptions can also help you eliminate some choices. In my search, I quickly saw that RT 693 is a variation of Jason playing the same guitar but with a variation from A:sync to B: 8ths. I auditioned the B part and it was ideal to create a variation guitar part for my song. Completing a filtered search in the Style PIcker for "Jason Roller" and further filtering to Country (sparrow is a country genre), 4/4, ev8,120, RT - Yielded 60 styles. Again, very manageable. You can then audition the styles choosing the option to 'Play over your chord progression' and hear Jason Roller playing these various guitars in various styles to the chords, key and tempo of your song. Hope this helps to get you going. Charlie

The song is one I created on BIAB 2012 - is there a compatibility issue using a 2012 tune loaded into 2017? It's simple arrangement with RT guitar bass and drums - needed to cut about 24 bars at the end.
Regarding the 'Audio' track - how/why is this created?

There are no compatibility problems between BIAB song files that I'm aware of. I'm still using some that I created long before 2006.
The audio track is created when the song is rendered to audio. This is a separate action and one that needs to be selected by the user. BIAB doesn't automatically save audio files from song files. There are options to "render", "save song as wav/mp3/wma" (etc.), "Save special" that will all render the BIAB backing to an audio file if the option is chosen.
If one doesn't need an audio file, then, in my opinion, it's best to stay with the default SGU or MGU file that is BIAB's native format.
Regards, Noel

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library.
