Hi guys,

Recently, I bought a new Dell system with the promise of free win 7 upgrade.
I haven't loaded much on to it yet since the upgrade package is due any day.
My dilemma is whether to upgrade from vista or do a complete clean install. There are of course pros and cons for both but since there are so many experts on this forum if anyone has strong opinions or advice I'd be most grateful.

Cheers,

Dave.

I would do a clean install HOWEVER the upgrade package may be just that and you won't have a choice.

Is it an upgrade package or a full version of win7?

If it’s just an upgrade package then you have no choice but to keep Vista on the machine for the upgrade.

If it’s a full version I would do a complete install. I think you will have fewer problems with a clean install.

In your position I'd put as much distance between yourself and Vista as humanly possible. If possible clear Vista out and start over. My music computer now has XP Home - I'll read how to upgrade from XP to Win 7 when I can afford it.

You didn't say whether or not the Dell was strictly for music or not - that might be a consideration.

Cheers - Ian

It will eventually be my main music computer but for now I'm keeping my older XP system running my music apps, primarily because the new system is Vista and 64 bit which are a "perfect mismatch" for most of my setup.

Dave,
Haven't done the Vista to Win 7 upgrade yet. I don't see that it should be any problem if you can do a clean install. Make sure you have a backup disk of the Vista, either partition or actual disks...actual disks are far better, since the Win 7 may overwrite the recovery boot sector on the hard drive. I suspect that the instructions will tell you how to proceed on this.

The Dell VistaWin7 upgrade is just that. It comes on two DVD's. One analyszes and configures and the second installs Win7 over the current Vista. Actually does a good job. I did it as designed and that is what I would recommend.

Hmm... Thanks guys,
Mixed opinions as I suspected. Jazzmandan - Thanks, it's comforting to know you have successfully completed the actual task to which I refer with no adverse consequences. I'm also surprised you received your upgrade dvd's so soon, Dell told me it won't be shipped until Dec 1st !

Cheers.... Dave.

Disks ain't expensive these days. Get yourself a fresh disk and install on a clean slate; don't wipe your original disk. During the fresh installation of some tried and true software that you used for years the installer may say -> number of licences exceeded, deactivate one license first. If you then don't have your original boot disk or got some corrupted original Vista disk or whatnot, you may be in license trouble ...

Happened to me with an Adobe license.

'Course you could deactivate all relevant licenses in the first place and then run the upgrade or an installation on some formatted original disk.

Like Ian, I'm using XP Home media edition. Right now everything is working fine on my Toshiba 105 Satellite laptop. I know this won't last forever, but I'm going to wait until I can afford a laptop specially built for music app's with a great sound card----if I live long enough
