IMPOSSIBLE THINGS

Here is another entry into the competition in the American 1 category. The style used was _SPECTER.

Lyrics by Cindy Prince
Music by Joanne Cooper

Is it impossible to fly?
Or is it just that we deny
Our ability to do so?

and Can we live forever?
Or must we sever
That line that makes us go?

Chorus
And the queen said to Alice,
“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many
as six impossible things before breakfast”

if we want a pretty palace
nothing but a shiny penny
It’s time we let ourselves be reckless

And believe in impossible things

Bridge
Imagine six things every morning
Six impossible things

Can we move through time?
Find the sublime
In every given moment?

Can we openly release?
Change war into peace
Live life with enjoyment?

Repeat chorus

Dear Ms. Cooper & Ms. Prince:

"Impossible Things" is one of the most unusual (and therefore memorable) songs composed with the help of BIAB that I've ever heard on the "User's Forum".

I say that because after listening to the first few measures of music, I was actually alarmed by what I felt was a downright despairing tone, or feel. "My god!" I said to myself, "This sounds like a musical suicide note!"

But then...but then, by the time I arrived at the chorus, the chord changes opened up suddenly to let in just a little light, and Ms. Prince's poetic and transformational lyrics turned the song right on its head:

Can we move through time?
Find the sublime
In every given moment?

Can we openly release?
Change war into peace
Live life with enjoyment?

And, even more:

Is it impossible to fly?
Or is it just that we deny
Our ability to do so?

Ms. Cooper, through the clear waters of your voice, the lyrics end up corresponding to the change in mood by inviting introspection on the part of the listener to consider what answers they might offer to the beautifully worded questions.

Ladies, your song, "Impossible Things", is something that I think should be listened to in a solitary space with no distractions. It could be anyplace from an echoing cave to a clearing in a quiet forest. That's how important your "message" is, that it shouldn't have to compete with anything to be heard.

Most sincerely,

LOREN

Oh my goodness Loren, what an amazing thing to say! You have me with a small tear in my eye. To invoke that kind of reaction through a song is a true privilege and one that I am always grateful for. "A musical suicide note" I can see it now.

Do you mind if I post your comment on the 50 90 forum? I am sure Cindy would absolutely love to read it?

I enjoyed both the instrumental and vocals of this song even though the lyrics were somewhat dark.

Beautiful song. I must say that I particularly enjoyed the lyrics, but it is also true that the music matched them perfectly. Excellent BIAB style choice.
Great concept overall. Flawless and touching.

Dear Ms. Cooper...

You may share my comments about "Impossible Things" with whomever you want. You and Ms. Prince wrote a unique song -- musically, formally, and contextually. All I did was react and respond to the experience of listening to it.

And please understand that my comment about a "musical suicide note" was not meant to be a negative critique. The fact of the matter is that I meant it as an observation about how a particular kind of musical "signpost" on the road through your song -- that is, its initial and seemingly hopeless, downward-spiraling sound (to me, at least) -- simply turned out to be a brief detour that set-up the unexpected surprise of the chorus, which pulled the song in into a "U-turn" that led it out of the darkness.

In other words, you and Ms. Prince gave me quite an emotional ride using the vehicle of your uncommonly constructed song! smile

Sincerely,

LOREN

Absolutely beautiful, Joanne. It sounds like you are channeling your inner Joan Baez (but I think you've got her beat).

And I really loved at then end where a lot of the accompaniment dropped out. Really emphasized the lyric.
