any time you mix midi and real tracks (wave files) in a project, you must have an interface or soundcard that can handle the task. Midi requires more processing of the data into sound whereas the waves are ready to go as is with very little processing, other than D-A conversion.

You first stated that the real track drums were out of sync, then perhaps the melody was out. Perhaps both since they are/might be, waves in the midi project.

The mysterious object you referred to is an interface. It is extremely useful in recording and playback..... but be sure you have a decent one. Be sure it can run ASIO drivers. If not, return it and get one that will support ASIO. Install and use the latest ASIO driver. ASIO can handle the midi and audio together and keep the tracks in sync. It's what I use with a Focusrite Interface and everything stays in sync perfectly.

Hope this helps.
