When importing midi into biab,are channel and track the same definition ?

Does biab have an option that automatically locates the melody track or does the track have to be indicated?

Although it is possible that a person could use the word "track" to mean a MIDI channel, in BIAB, the terminology usually means...

Channel = MIDI channel (i.e. 1 - 16)

Track = the seven BIAB tracks on which instruments are loaded (e.g. Bass, Drums, Piano... etc.).

The melody MIDI channel will need to be identified. This is quite easy if you use the green "SEQ" button. Using this, it's possible to mute the MIDI channels one at a time and thus home-in on the channel that contains the melody.

When you import a MIDI into BIAB, everything goes on the Melody track as a multichannel track. Using the Sequencer feature of BIAB, you can listen to each track individually. If you are using MIDI styles along with the imported MIDI file, be aware that there can potentially be some channel overlap between the MIDI file an the parts generated by BIAB, so you might end up with some interesting sounds (remember, MIDI plays whatever the last command on that channel was, so if the BIAB track play a guitar, but a the same channel from the imported MIDI file sets the instrument as a trumpet later in the time line, you'll get trumpet on both parts).

There's no standard in MIDI to say "this is a melody track". You'll just need to listent to the imported MIDI channels to see which is the melody.

If you open the midi in Realband first you can see what channel the melody is on by right clicking the track.
Then in Biab Import > Import Melody from MIDI file > Select that channel only.
In RealBand you can also drag the melody track to DROP MID > drag out to a folder then Import that Melody only midi to Biab.

Thanks guys for those helpful replies. (Regret my age is catching up with me and things of the past 15 years of biab keep slipping from my memory)

DP,

I agree with Pipeline... opening MIDI files in Realband (if you have the Windows version of the program) makes working with MIDI much easier. That was not a thought that occurred to me when I replied earlier.

Regards,
Noel

If you have a Mac or another favorite PC DAW note that most all DAWs, regardless of the OS, will do the same or very similar as RealBand.

OK, a random thought;
Why does toilet paper need a commercial? Who's not buying it?
