Band in a Box is my secret weapon. Some other composers turn up their nose at having software create a rhythm section. They do all the drudgery themselves. Me, I prefer to get on with it! Here is an example of an adult contemporary tune that I started in BIAB, and then moved to Sonar, where I used the Omnisphere and Trilogy synths to play the BIAB-generated parts, and then I added the lead melody and volume tweaks and swells. The drums are BIAB realdrums. The style was MELISS2. The link is below. It's the first tune on the list, called The Geese of Autumn Here is the page--- Glenn

I've made a bit of a project of taking BIAB and the Roland VSC DXi to their limits, making "retro" backing tracks for a few of my songs. It's still pretty shaky, but when I have something worth passing on, I'll post it here.

I'll be interested to hear it.
Even though I have newer much more powerful software synths, I still have the VSC in there on tunes.
And it's the workhorse when I am writing tunes in Band in a Box. I LIKE the sounds, even though they are lower fidelity. Add a little reverb or chorus as necessary and they can sound pretty nice.
It may be hard to find all the "stuff" in BIAB what with a million layers of menu options, etc. But I find that if you really learn how to use it, and how to use it creatively, use inversion chords, shape the bass with slash chords, taking time with it to use it's features to humanize the tracks it generates (pushes, chord stops and holds, etc.) then it can do some really nice stuff.
And it gets me styles that I sure don't know how to play properly. It's my little "studio band". Very versatile, even if not so creative on it's own.
Yes, there's only so much musicality you can create from random patterns. But sometimes you do get pretty lucky with it. Nice to have a few takes and cut and paste the best parts that 'work".
It's an amazing program.
