Los Angeles is one of those cities that I have visited somewhat often on business travel. It the only city in the world where I feel like there’s a musical narrative pointing out the scene. I have Tom Petty to thank for that. “Move west down Ventura Boulevard”. When I visit, maybe it’s a weird thing for me to do it but I find it hard not to resist pointing my rental car to be able to drive west down Ventura Boulevard, while Free Fallin’ plays in my head. For this visitor, it just makes a sort of magic happen. I know, I need to get out more.

I have been fortunate not to have succumbed to substance abuse. I used to really look down my nose that do or have done so. As I get older, I find myself having more compassion for those that do struggle with it, even those that brag about it. There’s a hole they are trying to fill. We all have our tendencies to try to fill that hole.

“She’s a good girl; loves her mama; loves Jesus and America too. She’s a good girl; crazy about Elvis; loves horses and her boyfriend too,”

Tom, that’s the California girl we love. Thank you for introducing us to her.

May you Rest In Peace.
