I know this is way off topic but I need help doing a video demo. I'm coming clean here I am a window cleaner but someday I'm hoping to get more into music. I have had some experience writing some of my own simple songs but I had a lot of help from folks here and from Real Tracks. I've just recorded Man in the Mirror aMichael Jackson cover. What I'm looking for- Is the sound balacnced-ie. should I stand closer to the camera, or should I try using mikes. Is the vocal okay-Did my style work on the song or should I stick to ballads-(I know I'm not a rock singer) Is the guitar okay or should I try Electric? Is the background okay (it was just my office) or should I use a curtain etc. Any thoughts would be helpful. And if I suck tell me, save me the headaches later on. Thanks-Here's the link- or you can just go to edbulmer on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxbTs_iTUlg web page

Hi Ed, Just my POV. I love this song too. First you have a nice voice. If you are more comfortable singing ballads why not slow this song down to fit your vocal style. The guitar playing would sound better if it were smoother - another reason to slow it down perhaps.
The background is not helping. I'd move in much closer to the camera and change the background.
The overall sound quality would probably be nicer mic'd but I'm not that video tech savvy so someone else I'm sure will advise you there.
Looking forward to seeing your next version.
Josie

Hi Ed
Any decisions made regarding production, should probably be based on the final product you are trying to represent. By that I mean.
1. What are you trying to feature?
Your playing, singing, mixing, or are you going for as close to a a full video production as possible.
2. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Same basic areas should be considered.
3. Hightlight the strengths and play down the weaknesses. Watch your video once in the morni and once in the evening daily for two or three days. Somthing will stand out to you that you are really happy with, and also something that you think should be played down.
The sound is fairly well balanced, the guitar may be a little lound, but you are in a hard square room with what appears to be the little condenser mic on the camera. Thats hard to over come.
Maybe build a backing track to augment your playing, use a stool to sit on, record in a much softer room, use a small mixer if your camera has a mic jack. Run a bigger condenser mic or two + the track mix direct from the mixer to the mic jack on the camera.
Crop in closer so you are shown sitting on a stool, make the room very dark, then use some side lighting about the 1:00 or 2:00 o'clock position in front of you, to seperate you from the white walls in the office.
These are just some suggestions, depending on how involved you want the finished product to be without spending a ton of money.
Rob

Lots of good corrective advice. So I'll keep my comments simple, I thought it was great, classic YouTube. I wish I could do the same. Heck maybe I can. Thanks for the inspiration.
