how do you get the program to just do a regular walking bass with not too many half notes, and not not too many tricks and doodads. just like 90% straight quarter notes?
i imagine there is a style for this, but i cant find it.

Hi francis, and welcome to the forum!
Most all of the Jazz styles, MIDI or RealTracks walk the bass in the "B" sections.
The part markers are those Blue and Green blocks overtop of the bar numbers in the chord view.
By default, BIAB will play the A subpart for the first chorus and then switch to the B supbart with walking bass for the 'inside' choruses, returning again to the A variation for the last chorus.
To get only the B variation part with walking bass for the whole song, just click on the blue part markers one time to turn them green, forcing B part for the whole song. Click again to remove, click again to start over with Blue.
A part marker also forces a Drum Fill that starts in the bar previous to the part marker. This is fine for most things because that's what a drummer will do when the song changes from one pattern to the next anyway.
Save song if you want it to load that way in the future.

Welcome to the forum, Francis. Mac is right above (as always - you'll find that out in due course) but you may not want all the song in B style with the other instruments so the thing to do is to generate the B part bass for the whole track and export it. Then port it into RB. Now, go back to BIAB and re-set the part markers you need so you can generate all the other parts and save them. Then import them into RB.
However, I believe there is a simple walking bass RT which you can also work with in RB. I am nowhere near my DAW at the moment so I cannot confirm this but I believe it to be true.

There is another way all within BIAB.
1- Find the style you like with the Bsubstyle walking bass" and load it.
2 - Go to Styles menu | Stylemaker | Edit Current Style. Style Window opens.
3 - Click on Save As and give it a new name - ie "WalkBass".
4 - Choose "Bass" in the style window. You will see A & B substyles
You want to keep the "walking" B Substyle, and turn the A substyle into "walking".
5 - Click on the Style menu in the style window.
6 - See "Flip Current Instrument (swap "a" and "b" substyles) OK
7 - Then click on Import Instrument from Style - Fill in Bass | Bass | Replace existing patterns | (Check) B substyle, Ending, Drum Fills, OK - you should be sent to the BIAB root directory.
8 - Then in the BIAB directory, find the original style you chose, click on it and the B walking substyle will show up in your new "WalkBass" style in the B substyle replacing the A substyle you flipped into the B position back in point 6.
The key here is to make sure you give the style a new name befor you begin this swapping of A & B substyles. This should leave you with a totally "walking bass" style. Let me know if it works for you.

It is true that many of the jazz bass styles are a bit too busy for my liking. On some of the styles I was even having a problem hearing where '1' is. My solution was to find a straight bass that I liked and substitute it in those styles where the bass is too flamboyant.

If you turn on the visual metronome it works ok. Flashes 1 at the right time.

I'm glad someone noted the "busy" real bass tracks, since I had been thinking the same thing. I've decided that I prefer the midi bass lines for live play. However, I always use real tracks for piano parts, rhythm guitar, and drums. Gotta have those for sure.

I for one LOVE 'em.
But not everybody is ready to play with the likes of Ray Brown et al.
The answer here is likely to be done by getting PGMusic to make some more Bass RealTracks, with more simplified playing styles.
Those who have to listen to hear the root at all times need that.
Well, what they really need is to start working at being able to know where the Tonic is at all times, in their heads. This takes time. Well. Worth. It. Am recalling the old music school improv drill of "never playing the tonic". That can expand the soloing abilities as well as the knowledge of the changes into an internalized thing. Along with forcing the entire solo to be played within the range of one octave. Drills like that make ya start thinking when playing.
Opens up a lot of things for you if you do elect to spend that time on the ears.
But it likely isn't for everybody.

Since I'm a jazz pianist and use Real Bass and Real Drums for accompaniment, the midi bass and drums just don't sound good or feel good. I understand that midi is great for uses other than mine. Real Bass and Real Drums just swing more than midi. For myself, since Real Tracks came out, playing with midi is almost like playing with a metronome. I love the Real Bass tracks that play more intelligent bass lines than midi. I don't want to get into a war about midi versus Real Tracks. Each has it's place. Later, Ray

I prefer Beefeater's with my tonic.
And, laid back jazz. There is a time and place for everything.
Just watched Elvis Costello and Tony Bennett doing a show together, Tony had his own piano player, no band, and at one point Elvis had the bride (Diana Krall) come out and play "The way I feel tonight". 'Twas magic, but he's lost his range so he just sang a lower note lots of times. I thought Diana made his piano player look out of place, but again it was a big difference in STYLES, and sometimes we need more basic stuff. I've played a song and my Mom never even recognized it until I un=jazzified it. LOL

I've not totally given up the real bass parts. I've kept them saved on many of the standard tunes. It's just that at times the player goes so high on the neck, or is noodling around that the bottom drops out. I've got to have that fat, beefy bottom---at least in music. I like the idea of maybe some options for simpler tracks, stripped down from a lot of the embellishments that come through at times.
