Q: how can one change the tempo of just one midi track within a song? I'd like to double the tempo of only a melody track, while keeping the whole song base tempo the same. thnx Jack

Jack,

Unless there's something that I'm not understanding properly, presumably if you double the tempo of the melody, you'll also need to double the tempo of the chord changes to keep everything aligned harmonically.

Have you played around with "Edit | Song Form | Reduce Chord Durations by 1/2" ? This setting also affects the melody.

Regards,
Noel

Is that even possible?

Of course it is... one way or another. The big question is WHY? What are you trying to achieve? And the problem is it probably won't sound good.

You know that if you take a midi track and double it's time signature, you make it play twice as fast and it's suddenly only half as long. To line up properly, you have to add twice as many measures to keep it the same length to fit into a song using a slower time signature.
Then you are faced with the big issue of "feel" or "groove". Does the double time fit the groove of the slower time? I'm guessing, probably not.

I don't think you can do this inside a midi based project. You would need to use a DAW and render the different track to audio.... after speeding it up and muting everything else... then copy it into a DAW project, turning off the time sync function for that track......

Seems like a lot of work to get something that you obviously are hearing in your head.

I will say that I have attempted to do similar things, mostly with drum tracks but they all failed miserably. Getting things to work properly just doesn't seem to happen when you are attempting to double time or even half time a track. At least that has been my experience.

Good luck and let us know if you actually succeed....and post the results so we can hear it.

I actually did this in reverse. Because of a cut-time issue, I took the melody into BIAB from another program, cut the length in half, and exported it back into my other program. I don’t know how to alter just the one track only in BIAB.

Nope, the style would fit the imported MIDI file for the melody only if the melody (itself only) plays twice as fast, hence the question .... thnx Jack

You can do that in RealBand

Edit - MIDI - Length of MIDI Music

This command alters the length of the marked area of all selected tracks by the specified percentage. For example, 50% will shorten the length by half. You can use the Data Filter to determine which events are affected by this command.

This command supports floating point percentages. You can specify a length percentage as a floating-point number, such as 110.5%

You could also load just the MIDI melody, alter the time length, export it, and import that back into your song.
