You have two options:
First try to add some color to the icons, I find this makes them my viewable. You will find an option for "skins" on the Preferences-Display page and will add the colors.
Second option is to toggle back to the original BIAB Screen. There is a small (very small) button on the left side which switches back and forth between old and new GUI.
