I'm sure I've asked this before, and it may have been in a different context as I have traditionally used external modules. But I'm trying to go an "all-software"router, using DXI/VST for MIDI.
I am unable to hear myself play in real time, playing along or recording. Even with MME (I have a very fast Windows machine) the RECORDING works with minimal latency. I just can't hear what I'm playing. I suspect it must have to do with channels? Any ideas?

If you're using an MME audio driver, then you can keep "Use VST/DXi Synth" checked. MIDI Thru (what you hear when you play on the keyboard) will still play through the MIDI Output Driver. So it should just work as long as the GS Wavetable is selected for Output. If you'd like to use an ASIO driver to bring down the latency (highly recommended), and your sound card or audio interface didn't come with its own ASIO driver, then you should be able to use ASIO4ALL. It can be downloaded for free from www.asio4all.com. When using an ASIO driver, MIDI Thru will play through the default DXi/VSTi synth, just like the other MIDI tracks.

Thanks.. but that does not play the VST/DXI sounds... just the GM synth (with a LOT of latency.) What I' trying to accomplish is to be able to play VST/DXI instruments in real time.

Thanks.. but that does not play the VST/DXI sounds... just the GM synth (with a LOT of latency.) What I' trying to accomplish is to be able to play VST/DXI instruments in real time. Are you using MME? If so, you will have "LOT of latency". That is just the way it is. Now the new WAS drivers - I don't know about. But with my MOTU Audio Express ASIO drivers the Latency is minimal to my ear. This is my experience: "When using an ASIO driver, MIDI Thru will play through the default DXi/VSTi synth, just like the other MIDI tracks." I can set a VSTi such as SampleTank to the Thru channel and hear those sounds.
