Hi,

I use baib for simple backing tracks to practice piano with.

I've found that practicing at a very slow tempo, such as 60 or even 50, while I get used to a progression, has many benefits.

My problem: when I slow a song way down, the notes (bass and drums) get drawn out, like they are in slow motion. This sounds bad. I'd think they should sound the same as at full tempo, but just play less frequently.

Is there a way for me to fix this?

Thanks,

I think that to avoid this, with Real Tracks anyway, is to pick a Style that is slow to start with and therefore has correspondingly slow instruments.
If you had picked, say,a 110-120 tempo style, then it would of course play at 60 but those particular RT instruments WOULD sound drawn out - like a 45 record played at 33 except that the pitch wouldn't change.
I'm not sure, because we're on holiday at the moment, if this applies to MIDI Styles but being purely electronic it shouldnt bother it what speed you set after you've launched it. I think.

Sixchannel is correct.

With RealTracks, try not to slow down more than 10 or so beats per minute (nor speed up more than 20 or so) from the designed tempo. It will work but you risk getting poorer sounds.

Larger MIDI tempo changes should not matter.

Anytime you slow down or speed audio content, it will create artifacts in the wave form (which results in what you are hearing). You can probably safely go 10% or so either way with the current technology, but anything past that and you will really notice it.

MIDI doesn't do that, because it just plays the notes and doesn't care how slow or fast the tempo is; however, the MIDI styles aren't going to adjust themselves based on the tempo. In other words, if you have a bass player playing half notes at, say, 120, it isn't going to start playing quarter notes because you dropped the tempo to 60. You'll just end up with very long sounding half notes.

yes.... what they said.

You want to select styles with a tempo range that encompasses your selected tempo.

Slowing it down to work on a lick is OK... deal with the strange sound of the drawn out notes since you're the only one who will hear it while you learn it... then speed it back up to normal tempo for the final mix.

Thanks guys!!

I did as suggested. Tried to find a MIDI track that has a natively slower tempo. Worked pretty well. I am not that picky about the style for these practice sessions.

Hi Steve,

I use BiaB for the same purpose, and what I found extremely helpful, and one of the most awesome and powerful features of this program that I rarely see mentioned on these forums, is that a good amount of tracks have a half-time, double-time, and/or triple-time feature, as applicable.

You should really watch this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGaxiaHndNg It's extremely helpful and does a great job of demonstrating the advantages of this feature in a short 2 minutes!
