Anytime you slow down or speed audio content, it will create artifacts in the wave form (which results in what you are hearing). You can probably safely go 10% or so either way with the current technology, but anything past that and you will really notice it.

MIDI doesn't do that, because it just plays the notes and doesn't care how slow or fast the tempo is; however, the MIDI styles aren't going to adjust themselves based on the tempo. In other words, if you have a bass player playing half notes at, say, 120, it isn't going to start playing quarter notes because you dropped the tempo to 60. You'll just end up with very long sounding half notes.
