John! You have your own thread on PG!

Now you have your own thread, too, Sam...

I just wanted to let you know that I went to the web site you posted in your profile and found that there were no live links on either the voice page or the music page. I was interested in listening to some of your stuff, but could not find a way to download or open them. I tried both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

You might want to check that out, as I'm sure others will be interested in listening to your music.

Hey John! Thanks for taking a look!

Wow!

And thanks for giving me my own thread! And right here on the PG forums!

You're right, though. Ain't nothing on the shelves YET. I've been waiting for a new studio mic - RODE NT1-A. It finally arrived yesterday and I picked it up today. Hopefully, in a week or so, I will have the shelves stocked! Voice demos, cover songs and such and then... MY music!

I have had some demos up before (on a previous site) but my Sound Engineer told me they were dreadful thanks to the mics I was using (just cheapo stuff). So, I pulled them down. I am actively looking for Voiceover work and I really need to put some demo tracks together. Now you have seen the store but 'the shelves are still empty'. Sorry about that but you are slightly pre-empting the demand. Cool that you have had a look though! Thank you

I have absolutely NO intention of becoming a session singer - my work is MY WORK. I am a great lyricist and vocalist (there I go singing my own charms again ). I know at the moment that it looks like a shop with all the labels on the shelves but nothing in stock... But hey, I only built that web site in November and I haven't started pushing it yet. Give me a chance! Please?

Now I finally have a REAL mic so... WATCH OUT WORLD!

Thank you so much though for taking a look - there will be great stuff there in a week or two...

Thanks, John

Sam

PS I am also busy building pages on MySpace and everywhere else but still having IT problems, as I'm sure you know if you've been watching the threads here (I know you have)

PPS I shall treat this thread as a blog... If anybody has a problem with that please PM me

PPS I do ALL my music work with PG software! If I make it, I will be only too delighted to say so!

My g/f and I have been discussing 'street music'. And she's quite prepared to do it! Why did it take me over 20 years to find this girl? She says the same about me!

She's now practicing her scales on the keys. I bought the keys (Yamaha PRS-200) about 15 years ago. I bought them then to help me with songwriting and then I found BIAB...

Finally, somebody is making real use of them

That's all for now

Hey, Sam, congratulations. Not many get their own thread.

More seriously, weren't you heading into surgery? Is that over? We hope it was successful.

Also, you mentioned MySpace. On the urging of one of my drummers, who is younger than my youngest child, I now am on the MySpace Artist page, for whatever it's worth. If you want a link to a friend from your page, give me an add request at mattfinleyflugel. At least, as a comp sci prof, I don't have IT problems.

Hi Matt

Thanks for the offer! I'll gladly add you in due course

Surgery? Yes. I'm still waiting for the referal letter from the neuro-specialist to the neuro-surgeon. My family (Mother, Sister, Brother) all want to come out and see me before I go under the knife so I guess it won't be happening before mid February.

I started a debate as to 'Folk vs Country' on another thread here on the Off Topic forum. As you are already on MySpace, you will know that you need to be able to define your music as a musician. I'm still not sure what to call my work. I would be interested in your thoughts on this.

On a lighter thread, this evening I am off to Joe Zawinul's Birdland to see a good friend of mine, Hans Salomon, playing with his 'Vienna Big Band Machine'. Hans has been playing sax professionally since 1945 and has the Honour Cross of Austria for his contribution to music. If you can read German, there is a page on him at Wikipedia. This is Hans at work...

Best wishes

Sam

I may have him on record. I have an old LP from the 60s by Friedrich Gulda, with a smokin' band of Vienna's jazz musicians. They could really play, and I loved his arranging. And then there's Joe Zawinul...

There was a lot of close co-operation between Hans and Friedrich Gulda. So, you probably do have Hans on record!

Joe sadly expired last year. I met him too on a couple of occasions

Hope you get all your stuff (health, PC, music..) together and soon so you can fill up those empty sites.

....'cos whatever it is you lack, it sure ain't self-belief!!

Good luck,

Thank you very much, Marc

Sure there are things I lack - organisation, patience, success, a recording contract, a neat and tidy flat (its chaos around here), children (I really envy you that one), a horse (but I have a dog), good health, reliable computers, a mansion, wealth, and... and... and...

Nope, good friends, a good woman, determination, talent and self-belief aren't amongst them though

Sometimes, that's all you need, eh?

I still have a lot to be grateful for

Update:

Finally made it to Hans Salomon's gig and arrived for the last 2 bars of the final chorus. Then, when everything had calmed down, found my way to go up and say 'Hello' and his immediate reply was "You've just arrived?" Man, did I have egg all over my face (English expression for being terminally embarassed).

Anyway, to cut a long story short...

This Jazz sax giant has kindly agreed to play sax on my new track! He wants the lyrics too though because he says that the melody and chords mean very little - he wants to play around the sentiment.

I now have precisely 1 week to come up with the lyrics. Normally OK but I'm used to working from the lyrics to the melody and this time I have to work the other way around. Man! That melody is so hooked into my brain now but I still don't know what I want to say with it or how...

Still arguing with myself about the title. 'Its A Start' was just a 'working title'. Now I am undecided between 'Another Start' and 'A New Start'. I want it to appeal to everybody and to put it in a way that everybody can relate to - it should be pertinent to those who are in a new life situation. The melody is very melancholic.

Sometimes you are very lucky to get given gifts and then you have to work out how to use them...

G'day Sam,
FWIW I reckon "A New Start" is more evocative than "Another Start" which suggests to me that "Starts" are happening relatively frequently - which in turn suggests a lack of reliability or consistency to me. I value reliability.

However, OTOH "A New Start" suggests that this could be a "oncer" - we ALL have at least one real new start in our lives but rarely more than 3 if they are to be of any real value... IMHO (just an opinion, not tryin' to start an argument)

Thanks, Lawrie

Input much appreciated. My g/f doesn't care much for 'Another Start' either

No argument perceived

Still learning a lot of things. This time Jazzman is helping me out! Thanks, Brian!

Latest news on my health situation: my Mother managed to find a doctor in Guernsey who has had 6 operations on his spine and 5 on his neck. She got his email address for me and we are now in contact. He has direct connections with the best neuro-surgeons in London so I might have to fly out there in the next few weeks for a second opinion

As to my song: I know that melody so well now but really need some input. What do you think about under the title 'A New Start'? What does it mean to you?

Well, the sentiment has been written. The lyrics are...

'It's A Start'

(4 bar intro)

(V1)
With each sunrise there comes a fresh dawn
Leaving the night behind
Time to find what you're looking for
To build the life you want

(Chorus)
A new start on a wonderful day
Take a chance to make your dreams come true
Opportunity is out there somewehere
And its waiting for you

(4 bar fill)

(V2)
Sometimes it takes a little more effort
Than you had in mind
But then you know you've got to start somewhere
And take your time

(Chorus as above)

(4 bar fill)

(Bridge)

(Chorus as above)

(4 bar fill)

(V3)
The results are worth it in the long run
If you really try
The happiness and fun it brings
Fulfils your life

(Chorus as above)

(Last 2 lines of chorus as above)

(Outro)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not my normal style of lyrics but the title was not an easy one!

Feedback would be helpful. Thanks.

Sam

Spent more than a couple of hours again today trying to find a way to get my melodies down on the page. Several people here on the forums were very helpful. Then I started talking about it here in Vienna...

I can write great lyrics, I can arrange, I can even come up with original melodies but the interface between the melodies of my songs and the arrangement has always been nigh on impossible because I have a problem with converting the melodies in my head into notes on the page.

Tonight... Amazing! My girlfriend / keys player told me tonight that if I give her a recording of the melodies to my songs, she can work them out and write them down and, with a little bit of BIAB education from me, turn them into MIDI notes. Hey presto! With that, my music REALLY comes to life!

Man, I've been looking for an answer like this for over 30 years!

So, now I can finally start getting all my songs in order and get them OUT THERE!!!

Again, watch this space...

Sam

Off to see the surgeon tomorrow morning to find out what kind of op I need. They certainly want to stick knives in my back or cut me through the throat (neither do I relish). Then I have to arrange to fly to London for a private consultation with a specialist there for a 2nd opinion...

My Mother (bless her soul) is absolutely emphatic that this op MUST be carried out privately. I have no insurance nor income of any value but she still insists. She has even stated that she will re-mortgage her house if necessary. "We are talking about the rest of your life - and you're an artist" she keeps saying. Bless her!

As my g/f states (and she's a trained MD), its one thing going into battle and hoping you will survive and quite another to walk voluntarily straight under the knife, let them cut you up and hope that you survive. In the first instance, you might sustain injury or even death, in the second you will...

At least this ain't the gallows, Madame Guillotine or Death Row...

"Beware the Ides of March" they warned Julius Augustus Caesar... "Et Tu Brute?" were his last words

Man! I just can't seem to get my head together while all this is hanging over me. Let alone sleep or eat properly.

Still, PG software and my songwriting keeps me distracted!

Regards

Sure do hope your surgeon has some good and reassuring plans to share with you tomorrow. Hang tough, there!

It's absolutely fantastic that your girlfriend is willing to help with some notation. I expect she also recognizes the therapeutic value of helping keep your mind off the medical challenges as much as possible. She may even succeed in passing on some notation skills. Like most musical skills, it's a matter of understanding some fundamentals and then practicing the art. The beauty of doing notation within music software is you don't have to just hear it in your head. You can get immediate feedback to know if you got it right or not. Plus, the software helps enforce the musical rules (unless you intend to break them on purpose - that can be a whole new set of challenges).

Best wishes.

I have just returned from a consultation with the neurosurgeon here after the 3rd MRI and he has confirmed that I am indeed in need of an URGENT operation. This showed up so clearly on the 3rd MRI (under flexion) that even I could see it and I'm no doctor. The problem is C3-4, C4-5 and C5-6. There is a severe narrowing of the spinal canal in this area and virtually no spinal fluid.

They can go in from the front or the back. If they go in from the front, there is a slight risk that they could damage my vocal chords as they have to move my throat out of the way in order to be able to remove 3 discs and replace them with articifical ones, or they can go in through the back, which means a more difficult operation, longer recovery and more pain for longer as they would have to cut through my back muscles and remove bone from my spine in order to be able to rectify the situation.

So, a slight risk of damage to my vocal chords (bear in mind I make my living with my voice as singer, voiceover artist and lecturer) or a far longer and more complicated operation with God knows what other potential complications...

They have said that, for them, it is a fairly 'routine' operation and that they have 15 specialists in this area. My g/f says they would not let someone without experience do this kind of operation so, in any case, it would be undertaken by an experienced specialist, maybe assisted by a junior surgeon. I discussed going 'private' and whether the consultant I've met would undertake the operation. His answer?

"Unless you have private medical insurance, the cost would be far too high and it won't get you any better treatment. Will I do the operation? It depends on whether it is one of my days here or not but I will certainly be responsible for it. I am only in this hospital 20 days per month and at this point I cannot guarantee that it will be me but we have 15 specialists here and you will be handled by someone with experience if it is not me."

Although he is very professional and obviously has a good reputation in Austria, he makes it sound as if it is like having a haircut... Then again, there are good barbers / hairdressers and bad ones.

This is my SPINE we are talking about. My neck is on the line - in more ways than one. If they get it wrong or I choose the wrong guy, I could end up in a wheelchair for life with no value in my voice.

I have emailed a specialist surgeon in London for some advice...

What would YOU do?
