I wonder if the pianos that you've been using are outside the recommended tempo range. If they are, audio artifacts are introduced and these could have that 'robotic' sound that you describe.
The normal range of tempos for RTs is around -10 to +15... thus if the RT ends in something like 085, this indicates that it is best used at a tempo of 85 bpm and will probably be ok as low as 75 bpm and as high as 100 bpm.
I personally find that the piano doesn't tempo stretch too well and +/- 5 bpm is a better range.
