So I have been thinking a lot about how many genres and sub-genres of music are out there and how music is a constantly evolving creature. It made me wonder -- if I had to compare my personality to a specific music genre, which genre would it most closely represent and why?
I thought maybe this would be a fun question to ask you guys on the forum. I would be curious to see if your favourite genres or the genres you like playing or writing for are similar to the genre of music that reminds you most of your own personality.

Interesting question. Janice and I love the blues and at least half of what we write are that genre. The irony is that Janice is a very positive person. Now she is a realist and understands that negative things happen and exist all around us but she can negotiate her way through a minefield of negativism and come out on the good side. I'm lucky to be able to go along for the ride.
However, the lyrics we write tend toward the negative or at best toward redemption after some negative occurrence. It's the blues! And, of course I'm biased, but I think Janice sings the songs we write very convincingly. She can put her heart and soul in a lyric that she would never actually live out. I tell her she's like a method actor. So it's hard to say that it reflects her personality but it does reflect her love of the genre.
We tend to be attracted to most any singer, irrespective, of genre if they are soulful and heartfelt and we tend to find a lot of that in blues...so for us that's the one.

I would probably be older school synth based and techno music, like The Thompson Twins, Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby, and to a degree Talking Heads. I like the "moving parts" aspect of techno. Drum machines, MIDI bass..... I would have killed somebody and stepped over the corpse to have a Fairlight when they were the thing. Was (Not Was) was one of my favorite bands EVER because so much of their music had the technology flair to it.

I'm just a musician. I've played Classical (from Baroque to Contemporary), Rock (from 50s to current), Pop, Jazz (from swing to bebop), Blues, R&B, Country (from Hank to Nashville), Disco, Calypso, Soca, Reggae, Punk, Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, Samba, Ballroom Dance, and several other genres.
I rather like putting on a different "hat" and playing different kinds of music. And I like being able to do the different styles authentically. We did a Cuban-American wedding and they made us "Official Latinos", the Reggae band on one of the cruise ships told us we were the only white band he has heard do Soca and Reggae right, and we've had a few other experiences like this.
So it would be easier to list the kinds of Western pop music I don't play; Rap, EDM, and Metal. The lack of melodic/harmonic structure in Rap and EDM would bore me but it would be fun for just a few songs per gig, and I might like Metal, but there is no market for that around here.
If I had to pick one genre and one genre only to play it would be a very, very difficult decision. Would I choose jazz for its challenges? Blues for its gut emotions? Rock for its power? Classical for its complexity? Latin American for its rhythms? And so on.
There are only 12 notes, and the difference between genres is the choice of notes, but mostly the expression of those notes.
So I'm not a genre musician, just a musician. And I like it that way.
It also helps when writing styles for BiaB. Having experience playing those different genres helps me write authentic styles for those genres.
Being a musical chameleon gets us gigs that would not be open to other bands, and helped us pay off the mortgage.
It's all good.

Can't wait to see what everyone says! Interesting question. As far as playing and writing goes, mostly emotive music. So blues, blues/rock, ballads. Typically, but not always, in minor keys. Not sure if that matches my personality though, would need to ask my wife I guess

Hi Ember. Yes, interesting question.
I enjoy playing most sorts of music, but if it comes down to matching something
to my personality, then it has to be Rock & Roll - music which likes to have
a good time and which doesn't take itself too seriously!

I was weaned on Old Country and Bluegrass genres but slowly drifted into R&R in my teens because I was the "younger crowd draw" in a popular Standards Band in Northern Minnesota. I had brought the Everlys and Elvis into the mix and slowly left my "roots" music toward Gordon Lightfoot Folk and Classic R&R. I even traded my pre-CBS Fender Strat for a Gibson Hummingbird to sound more Lightfoot-ish.
I am still soul-stirred by the songs of my youth, probably because my big family ( 7 kids ) were together in the war years around a staticy radio listening to Grand Ole Opry and WSM Barndance as a happy family. Music has always been a comfort to me.

I would say it would be the guitar alt new wave bands of the 80s. U2, The Smiths, REM, The Alarm, Til Tuesday, the 77’s. With a healthy side dish of Eddie’s list.

Ember, I have pondered over your question which is something I'd never really thought about before. I was going to make a joke and say when it comes to music genres and personality, just call me Cybil (multiple personaltiy) but seriously, I like so many genres the few ones I don't like are miniscule compared to all the ones I do.
