Hello,
This is not a BIAB-specific question - it's more a MIDI piano roll question. It is extra exciting because my MIDI knowledge base is in its infancy.

I am writing a virtual instrument bass part (AmpleSound P-bass) using the MIDI piano roll in Reaper - I am playing nothing with a MIDI keyboard. Although I'm writing it in Reaper, to my uneducated eyes most DAW's piano rolls seem to operate pretty much the same. Perhaps that's not the case.

All is going well except at the very end of the song - the ending bar (#75). I want the ending bass note (C) to be struck once at the beginning of bar 75 and then ring on/die out naturally for another two full bars - maybe three. If I add MIDI bars 76, 77 and 78 (each bar with a whole C note entered) the note is picked at the beginning of each bar - which isn't the plan.

Is there a way to make an ending note sustain thru multiple MIDI bars when writing a virtual MIDI part with the piano roll?

If I'm not in the right forum with this question, please direct me where I need to be...

Thanks in advance!

I use Reaper and piano roll for midi regularly. All you need to do is to....

1. Enter the note (it will enter a default length).

2. Drag the right end of the note to the right until it is the length you desire.

3. If you don't have enough space, you'll need to drag the length of the actual midi track/item to the right first before doing the above.

The below Youtube link might help. Kenny Gioia's work is excellent.

Hope the above helps,
Noel

Noel's advice is spot on unless the MIDI sample has a natural decay. For instance a piano note will decay at some point regardless of how long you make the note in the piano roll view. But an organ note will play as long as the note. I believe that your bass has a natural decay, I have the same bass but I am not at my music computer right now, so I don't think that it is going to sound that long.

Noel, Mario...

Thank you very much gentlemen the MIDI directions worked just fine.

Noel, Tip #3 was exactly what I needed in the equation - additional thanks for the link to Kenny G's Reaper MIDI stuff on YouTube. I'll be taking notes as I watch it...

Mario, the bass did have a natural decay. It faded away at the perfect time, about 2 bars after the ending note sounded.

As my hand's arthritis events increase, MIDI guitar and bass keep looking better and better! I am very happy with the results/sound of the Ample Sound virtual stringed instruments. But getting those results has been frustrating at best - the manual isn't good, key switches and other piano roll articulations seem to differ depending which DAW one is using - and nobody has developed a cheat sheet for using Ample Sound products in Reaper yet. Their You Tube training videos are mainly targeted to Cubase users and keyboard players. And communicating with the folks in China who developed the Ample Sound software isn't easy. But sticking with it has brought me to a point that I'm beginning to get acceptable results.

Glad to read that it worked out.

In relation to this 3rd tip, I forgot to mention that a Reaper midi item has two possibilities when being dragged right (it depends on where the cursor selects).

Possibility 1: the length of the item extends further (this is the one you needed).

Possibility 2: a loop is created of the current item. This is useful if you create a midi item and you want it to repeat over and over throughout the section of a song.

All the best,
Noel
