Am just learning how to use this. Had a pretty rough time today.

I am trying to make a backing track for an old "Cream" song, "Badge." I found that almost any rock style sounds pretty decent, except for one thing. There are a couple bass measures, maybe six, which have to have a "signature" bass lick in them.

So here is what I did. I deleted the "Real Track" bass track because I don't believe you can notate Real Tracks. In place of that track I added a midi style bass line. It was that which I annotated. I just wrote the important few measures.

I saved my work.

Then, after I played the tune back a few times, my edits just simply disappeared and the bass track went back to its original format.

What the heck? What did I do wrong?

Thanks.

Michael

Michael, you actually didn't do anything wrong, it's just that the Bass track (all tracks except Melody and Soloist) will be overwritten by BiaB when you next Generate the song.

If it's a MIDI track, then I think Freezing the track after your edits will retain the MIDI data. One way that Freezing is performed is by pressing the small asterisk (snowflake) next to the specific track on the mixer. Frozen tracks are shown in blue. Save the song after freezing the track(s).

goofeyfoot,

I got caught with this until I found out about the freeze function, but even then sometimes I forgot to freeze.

Luckily another way was introduced a few versions back.

Go to; Edit / Copy Special / Copy/Move Tracks.

This will allow you to copy tracks from one source to another, so in your case you could copy the Bass to the Melody or Solo Track then mute the Bass track.
The midi channel for the Bass track is ch2 but I usually leave all selected.
When the Bass copies to the Melody or Solo track the notes will visually be an octave lower, this is correct. As far as I'm aware the true Bass track has been configured so that the notes don't sit too far below the bass clef, hope this makes sense.

Anyway, I find doing it this way allows more scope for editing without the need to freeze. For example, if after editing I need to change key, this cannot be done to a frozen track, but the Melody or Solo track will change as normal.
Hope this is of use to you.

regards
Vintage

What's even better than all these workarounds is to move the song to Real Band. You have none of these issues there because as a DAW RB treats each track individually and does NOT regenerate anything unless you specifically tell it to.
