Hey BiaB'ers, I'm jonesing for the BiaB 2018 for Mac to show up. All that the web site is showing is Windows additions, changes, etc. and I'm ready for us Mac folks to get our goodies (sorry for the rant, but I'm ready to rock!). I'm assuming that the next Mac version will be showing up in May/June, as it usually does, and PG music never gives any info early regarding release, features, etc. Anyone heard anything by "back channels" regarding info on BiaB 2018 for Mac. I'm ready!

I'll be very surprised if there are any early hints. But I have to guess that they're working on it as we speak.

Well, since Apple has promised that the next OS will no longer support 32 bit, the next version of BIAB for Mac has to be 64 bit. Many of us won't be upgrading if it isn't and, if that means doing without, that's what it means.
If I have to wait longer for the next release, that's ok. Got my upgrade budgeted already. Other than that, the current version is working well in High Sierra.

It certainly feels like Apple is signaling the death knell for 32 bit applications. As surprising as it is that BIAB is in that category it would be hard to imagine many people buying a new version today when Apple has made this signal. It would be like buying an analog cell phone after the FCC announced they were shutting down the analog cell network.

What I just read on this subject, from CNET, is that the next OS after High Sierra will still run 32-bit apps, but Apple will call any to your attention. App developers are of course urged to make the change to 64-bit. Some of Apple’s own apps need upgrading.

From 10.13.4 beta release notes “When users attempt to launch a 32-bit app in 10.13.4, it will still launch, but it will do so with a warning message notifying the user that the app will eventually not be compatible with the operating system unless it is updated.”

Where did you find that information, Matt? The Apple official information on e.g. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208436 still says "The 64-bit transition for macOS and macOS apps is still underway, so final transition dates have not yet been established." Hence I unfortunately think that that the message from June still holds: High Sierra will be the last macOS release to fully support 32-bit applications “without compromise.” /Björn

/Bjorn, it was a short post by CNET in my Facebook feed, the same day I posted here. I follow CNET, but I do realize CNET does not have a perfect record for accuracy.

I guess no one at this point on the Mac side has heard whether BiaB 2018 for Mac will be 64 bit? Hopefully, they'll make the transition.
I've yet to update to High Sierra on my Mac, being concerned that many of my 3rd party plugins used with my DAW (I use Logic Pro X) will not work with High Sierra, though a number of 3rd party developers have made the transition.
I'm in no rush. Sierra still does the work for me in Logic and BiaB, as well as keeping all of my 3rd party plugins active. I am getting an annoying message in the upper right-hand corner of my Mac screen frequently, prompting me to upgrade to High Sierra. Biding my time for the moment.

I could be wrong, I hope, but I think it will be a year or more away: ))) " Apple announced long ago that OS 10.14 should be released in late 2018 and that support for 32 bit will be dropped. " I think that’s only for apps in the App Store, not external apps like Band-in-a-Box. There are lots of legacy 32 bit Mac apps out there. Your signature mentions your OS 9 legacy apps, so I assume that’s welcome news for you. I expect Apple will update the OS at some point to prevent 32 bit apps of all kinds from running. There will first likely be a period of “app shaming” where the OS displays a cryptic message about how this app needs to be updated and may slow down your machine. (Note the irony in that message, when the OS X Intel-security-fix update itself might slow down your machine ).

Logic Pro X is 64 bit only. The only way you can use 32bit plugs in it is with a wrapper such as 32Lives ($99) which does work in High Sierra. If you boot from an SSD, High Sierra absolutely is better. If you want to read about it’s best feature, go Here: Snapshots- APFS and High Sierra

As of today, what current Apple app has not been upgraded to 64 bit? Sound Radix has announced that they intend to keep 32Lives working if they can. Perhaps there will be other 32 bit wrappers but I’m not counting on that. I’m making plans to upgrade Office, dammit. I want 2008 to work forever. I have 2011 (which still installs in 10.13) but never liked the interface. Other than that, DSP-Quattro has been promising 64 bit for years — perhaps this will get Stefano off the stick.

Mike, I have no idea. I was just quoting what CNET wrote. Sometimes I wonder if people are confusing Mac OS with iOS.

Interestingly, there’s a Terminal command that Apple has enabled that allows one to disable 32 bit apps in OS 10.13.4—it doesn’t work in 10.13.3 or earlier (I tried). As one expects, BIAB doesn’t work. How to enable 64 bit only in OS 10.13.4 Bottom line for me is that I will not upgrade my copy to the next version unless it it is 64 bit. 2017 Audiophile actually does most of what I need so there’s no desperation on my part if it’s not. My only concern is that, if 2017 doesn’t work in the next OS, it may affect my next Mac purchase. If I buy an iMac Pro, it’s not an issue as I can boot from another SSD. If I wait for the next Mac Pro, that’s another issue.

Hmmmm... I found the current 32 bit Apple App and the other mentioned in the article. DVD Player 5.8 is the only current Apple App that's still 32 bit. QT 10 can play DVDs so it will be interesting to see if Apple either updates DVD Player (doubtful) or builds its ease of use into QT 10. Perhaps they'll call it QuickTime 11? I hope they do one or the other as DVD Player is a slick little application. QuickTime 7.6.6 lost some of its functionality in High Sierra so it can't really be called a current app. It's been an optional install since OS 10.6 so no surprises there. Other than a few of the extra functions that the Pro version allowed, I have no idea what/if QT 7 can do that QT 10 won't so that won't get an upgrade. I've been expecting 7 to go away since that was first announced in Mavericks. As for the QT Pro, those conversion/export features are nice but a) they can be performed in iTunes or QT 10 (but not as easily) and b) they only work on one file at a time. Fortunately, there are inexpensive apps that do batch processing. Interestingly, QT 7.7 was the last update for OS 10.5—it hasn't worked since and should be trashed if still present in the Applications Folder. QT 7.6.6 can still be downloaded from Apple and installs in the Utilities Folder only. If you haven't needed it before, don't bother as QT 10 or iTunes can do anything it could. QT 7.6.6 download Three years ago, I was panicking that QT 7 Pro was going away — now I won't miss it thanks to other apps I have. In fact, I had no idea it was no longer fully functional till just now. Apple stopped selling new licenses years ago and worse, wiped our license info from out User Accounts when the transition to The App Store was complete. Fortunately, I'd made a screen shot of my $29.95 QT 6 Pro license and these are still forward compatible w/ QT 7.6.6. There never was a Pro version of QT 10.
