Hey there fellow BiaB devotees.

I've been following the latest thread on the composition of "modern" sounding songs in BiaB with great interest. This is not by any stretch the topic has come up here in the forums, and will not be the last.

As I've mentioned on a few previous occasions here in the forums, I don't personally use BiaB to make music, but for practicing and learning bass and guitar styles and genres. That said, I've developed a deep fascination not only with BiaB, but with other music production tools and techniques, and spend a fair amount of time watching instructional videos and reading up on songwriting, production, etc.

I get what folks here, and often wondered how I would go about making a more "modern" sounding composition in BiaB.

Therefore, I am now soliciting "donations" of previously recorded tracks to see what, if anything, I could do to make them sound more "modern" or like something you would see on the charts (I don't personally write songs and probably can't sing).

So if you have a song that you would like to volunteer for treatment, please feel free to send it to my gmail as 1) a SGU or MGU file 2) the vocals on a separate track and 3) an MP3 of the final product. My gmail account is my username with "909" instead of "09."

Terms and conditions: By sending me your file you agree that if I do work on it and complete a project, I have the right to post it to my sound-cloud and/or use it to make demo videos to post to Youtube so that I can show what I've done and changed. Note that I will give you full credit--and take none for myself--other than describing exactly what I did and why I did it. I have no expectation of making money through music, and this is purely for informational purposes.

Finally, I'm crazy swamped at work right now, so I apologize in advance if I don't respond to submissions in detail and/or take forever to come up with results.

Thanks in advance for your interest and participation. :-)

DO you write, and if so, do you have players come in and play parts for you?

When I first got this software, I thought it was "cute" and I would use it as a composing tool, to then have live players come in and play over the generated tracks. That idea last exactly one song. After weeks of

My car broke down.
My kid is sick.
I have a gig.
I have a rehearsal.
I had to work late.
I am too tired.
My wife is mad at me and I have to stay home tonight.

I decided that people suck and now I just use the generated tracks. I had ONE guy come and do some piano work for me, and one guitar player came in to do a solo. When I reviewed that guitar player's work, the Brent Mason solo I generated after was WAY better.

So for me, again, ME, not everybody, the stuff I can do with this software is far better than what I can play, and Real Band is far more reliable than people. (See that list of excuses above.) If I have a thought at 3am, I can walk 12 steps from the bedroom to this computer and flesh the rough sketch out. And when I want a guitar solo, Brent is always available. And he does my session free. And the quality of his work is far superior to what I can get out of a local guitar player.

So the point of that missive was to say that the value of this software varies, relative to how the owner uses it. My one and only CD was 85% Real Band, and nobody knows it wasn't live players if I don't tell them.

Floyd once had a gag web page with pictures and bios of his "band". It was really funny, but through the humor it illustrated just how real the music created by this software is. Not knowing the joke, seeing the web page and hearing the music, it looked 100% legitimate.

Back to your topic, what exactly are you going to do? Replace generated tracks with live players? Change the Real Drums to other Real Drums? That kind of thing?

PS. Floyd, I miss Pickles.....
