Here's my newest effort, a five-minutes blues about the things that make people grouchy today. https://soundcloud.com/sam-buttrey/firstworldproblemsIt's called "First World Problems." I hope you enjoy it. Also let me know if you think it's just too long. =FLK12_T.STY style with Drums: RD: Pop128^2-a:Snare, HiHat , b:Snare, Ride :Craig Scott Trumpet solo: Trumpet, Jazz Ballad Sw 085 , Don Clark The rest is from the style, with Organ soloist -- I added the horn hits. I put a little EQ on the vocals and a little reverb on the whole thing. My DAW is Reaper. Have fun.

Here's my newest effort, a five-minutes blues about the things that make people grouchy today. Also let me know if you think it's just too long. Well....not a genre I'm well versed with. I tend to think that the length of any song we write is creative license. If that's how you want it then it's fine. I'd submit that if one wants to hold the listeners attention throughout with this type of song (it's not 'rock' to me...more of the laid back, almost a big band type genre) and amount of lyrics I'd say cull it down to 3:30.. Of course, that would force culling of lyrics to tighten up the story/lyrical flow which may not fit your agenda for this tune. But, that's just me. FYI NOTE: I had to turn my laptop to full volume to achieve just a moderate listening level. Good luck with your writing goals.....carry on

I liked the rhythm and chord progressions. It's a nice singer-songwriter piece of music.

I would also put this in the almost big band genre or maybe the old 6-7 member combo bands.
Anyway I really liked this. The listing of the first world problems are spot on, but we have it extremely easy compared to third world problems! Your instrumentation, mix and vocals are also spot on.
As far as the length goes my philosophy is that it has to be long enough to tell your complete story, be it 3 minutes or 15 minutes. IF you want radio air play length the 2.5 to 3.5 minutes is the range you have to be in. YMMV
When you are at the checkout line and they ask if you found everything say "Why, are you hiding stuff?"
64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware

Thanks for listening, and the note on the volume. I was surprised to find out that "Blues" is not one of SoundCloud's pre-defined genres, so I picked "Rock." Only then did I see that one can declare a custom genre, so I've done that for this.
You're right that sometimes you have to get the whole story in. In this case I think I can distill the lyrics without losing anything vital.
Thanks again for taking the time to listen and comment.

Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment! It's very helpful.
I don't think I can pretend to aim for radio airplay, but I want to be able to inform and entertain without getting repetitive or boring. Thanks again for the feedback.

Neat back track. Super vocal and lyric. Has a 40'2 - 50's vibe to me. Something like a Cab Calloway song. Well done..

Nice Cab Calloway vibe to me too. 3 to 4 mins with rare exceptions is about the length of my attention span for songs. Some clever lines and you have a nice voice. The track volume was a bit low. Keep 'em coming!
