If a song is genuinely in the public domain (laws vary by country) then you own all rights to your version unless you copy somebody else’s published version. In the US a song must have been published prior to 1923 to be PD but there are exceptions like songs for which the rights expired and were not renewed or for which the origin is simply unknown.

We have posted many PD songs but we don’t call them covers because that term typically means performing a published non PD tune. We also include in our post the basis of determining the song was PD. We frequently tweak/rewrite lyrics, change the chord structure, etc., but that is not necessary.

Many old hymns have been posted over the years.
