Hi gear specialists,
i have a question about my guitar amps. I have 2 amps, a little Bugera v5 infinium and a Marshall 100 code (new). Here comes my question.
I want connect the Bugera to the Marshall so that i can hear the Bugera sound coming out of the 2 speakers from the Marshall. I was thinking to put a guitar cable and plug one side in the headphone output of the Bugera and the other side in the return of the fx loop of the Marshall. Would that work ? And can i not make any damage ?
An other way, maby if i connect the headphone out of the Bugers with the aux in of the Marshall ?
I will not try this out untill i get a solution from you guys to avoid making damage to these amps. Maby you know a better solution.
Thank you for helping me.
Christiaan

Your idea to connect the Bugera HP output to the Fx return of the Marshall will work but it is not ideal and if not done carefully and correctly can cause damage. The Bugera output looks like it can be reduced to .1w and you should definitely do that if you do make the connection as you've outlined. The Marshall Fx return is designed to receive line level output and not headphone output. It is easy to overdrive the signal.

A better solution would be to send the Bugera output to a mixer and send a line level from the mixer to the Marshall Fx return. You may also get fair results using a headphone to line level converter but you can get a used mixer for the same cost and will likely find it more useful for other tasks in the future.

Thank you very mutch for your advice. I have allready ordered a small mixer and it will arrive end of this week. I am just unsure about next... when i have the mixer, do i have to connect the Bugera amp out to the mixer or the Bugera headphone out to the mixer ? Then the mixer out goes to the return of the fx Marshall.
Thanks for your answer and when the mixer arrives, i let you know the result.
Best regards,
Christiaan

On the Code 100 you have a 1/8-inch aux in jack which is usually designed to accept headphone output from cell phones, iPad/iPods, mp3 players, etc.

Always good advice to start with outputs as low as possible but the power amp output and the headphone output are likely independent of one another (but both controlled by the preamp section).

The first question you should ask yourself is: Do you like the sound of your Bugera through headphones (i.e., the headphones jack)? If not, you're likely to be wasting a lot of time and effort with GOGI/GIGO kludges. A mixer would probably be the Swiss-Army-Knife solution but don't be disappointed if it doesn't cut as surgically or as deep as you might expect---you're introducing, for better or worse, even more circuitry and processing into the signal path. A Red Box is a DI designed to do what you want.

There are DIY ways to connect your Bugera directly to the Marshall's speakers but it WILL cause damage if not done and used properly and, given your expressed understanding of I/O (no disrespect intended), I'm not going to advise it.

Even though the Bugera v5 infinium is only 5w, have you tried simply connecting the V5 to the Marshall speakers directly? Assuming the back is open..

Another option is to use a direct box (DB) off the V5... with output of the DB going to the input of the Marshall. The only issue here is to be sure ALL volume controls are turned DOWN. Then, you want to set the Marshall for a clean channel and slowly turn up both amps until you have the tone from the V5....and the volume you want from the Marshall. DB's are used all the time professionally to capture bass, guitars, keyboards and get them cleanly and safely into a mixer.

It's really the safest way to do this job.

If you are playing a live gig, I can understand the need for the volume. If however, you are recording, you don't need the volume. I have heard little one watt amps sound better than a Marshall Stack, recorded. None of my guitar parts are recorded loudly. Many are very quiet in the room. Including when I use my Boogie. It has the power to handle a stage show, but sounds really good turned down low.

Thanks a lot for the advice. Tomorrow my mixer will be delivered, if it does not works well, ill consider to connect the Bugera directly to the Marshall speakers. I know an electronical specialist who can do this properly and professional.
Best regards,
Christiaan.

"Even though the Bugera v5 infinium is only 5w, have you tried simply connecting the V5 to the Marshall speakers directly? Assuming the back is open.."

Bad advice. The Bugera is a 4 ohm load - the Marshall is 8 ohms. Bad MOJO!

Wait for your mixer. You can patch both in nicely.

Regards,

Bob

Come one now..... Bad Mojo? no way.

It's a 100% tube amp. pre and power tubes. You won't kill a tube amp, or even hurt it with a mismatched speaker load. We played lots of tube amp speaker load combinations in lots of bands and had no problems. We did it intentionally to get the different tonal characteristics of the mismatched load.

If the amp was solid state there would be merit to the argument because transistors are more affected by the lower impedance. But that also depends on the design of the amp regarding cooling ability.

But, if you wanted to follow the advice of Bob..... just put 2 marshal cabs in parallel and waaa laaa, you have a 4 ohm load.

I would not worry about destroying the V5 with a 4 ohm cab. Seriously.

Hi guys,
again, thanks for the advice.
Yesterday the mixer arrived and gave no good result, neither the straight connection Bugera headphone out to Marshall fx return, allways bad sound. Now i go test to connect directly from Bugera out to the Marshall speakers. I think i can not do anything wrong because at the backside of the Bugera, where the output to the speaker is, is printed a message " 4 ohm MINIMUM ' and the Marshal is 8 ohm, so .... ill try it. I just have to go to the shop to find a speaker cable for the connection . I let you know.
Thanks a lot.
Christiaan.

From the pictures on line that I see of the back of the V5, a simple guitar cord should work to connect the Marshall cab to the V5. Picture of the back is second one down on the left. Click it.

Bad sound from the V5 into the mixer is from the impedance mismatch between the two. On the input side, impedance matters more for the quality of the sound. You probably have a very distorted sound, or a very low, weak sound. The Direct (DI) Box I mentioned would solve that issue. For recording however, I would tend toward a microphone on the V5 speaker over a DI.
