So I've managed to install the basic program over my old 2014 version. I'm assuming that the main program folder got deleted and replaced? Obviously. the old midi and real tracks are still there owing to the fact that I am yet to install the 32 GB worth of real tracks, I have little disk space to spare, so I just want some of the new real tracks (Mailny Jazz-Bebop types). How do I do this? Will all the instruments be present, or are they from all over the place? I seem to recall that some sounds belong to various "groups". DoI need to delete some old files to make room for the new? Where will I install these new files to? How do I know which old ones to delete? Could I just delete all my old ones and install only the new styles I want?

Thanks in advance!

Why not install the instruments and tracks to an external USB or even better, an SD drive (most Macs have a built in SD slot these days)? You can get a 32G USB thumb drive or an SDHC card for cheap—64G (and larger) drives and SDXC cards aren’t that much more. In fact, you would move your 2014 data over and free up space on your main drive.

Don’t know what Mac you have—some older Macs may not support SDXC cards without an external reader so check first. SDHC is limited to 32G while SDXC is available up to 512G. BTW, you’ll see different speed ratings on SD cards—an issue for high speed cameras but not for you. USB 2 is fast enough for this.

Once you’ve moved your libraries and tracks, it’s easy to tell BIAB where to find them. This is why you move your older and newer data over so that it can be found in the same place.

You still install the BIAB app and supporting files onto your boot drive, of course.

The RT's are already on a flash drive that I purchased. All I want to do is to find a way to install, from the flash drive, just some of the real tracks to my internal drive. Other than installing them all and then deleting, is there another way?

princeplanet,

On Windows computers you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + C to copy every file you highlight and then use Ctrl + V to paste the copies wherever you want.

On Mac computers Command + C is copy while Command + V is paste.

I hope that helps.

What Jim says.

Why wouldn't you just keep them on the flash drive and free up hard drive space? All you have to do is tell BIAB to look for them there.

I have done exactly that on my MacBook Pro, where I need to preserve space somewhat. It's quite akward, though, since the RealTracks are split into several files. The audio files are the easy part. They are located in the 'RealTracks' folder, organised into separate folders with informative names, such as '/Applications/Band-in-a-Box/RealTracks/Banjo, Tenor, Rhythm DixielandFastA-B Sw 165'. The other type of files are trickier. They are corresponding Soloist files, located in the 'Soloist' folder, with somewhat cryptic names (they seem to follow the ancient DOS filename conventions, with max 8 char file names and 3 char extension), which however seem to follow a naming pattern, such as '/Applications/Band-in-a-Box/Soloists/RBanj013.ST2' and '/Applications/Band-in-a-Box/Soloists/RBanj013.XT2'.

I haven't found an easy way to pair them. What I did was the following: From my external drive (containing all RealTracks and Soloists), I copied the RealTracks folder that I wanted (mostly Jazz realtracks in my case) into the RealTracks folder on my MacBook. I then started Biab, and opened up the RealTracks picker dialog. In that dialog, there are two checkboxes 'Show RealTracks that are N/A' and 'Show Error Messages'. I checked both of them, and clicked the 'Rebuild and Fix' button. The RealTracks list in the dialogue now shows error messages for those RealTracks where the Soloist files are missing (referring to those cryptic 8+3 filenames). So I went through the list, locating the corresponding .XT2 and .ST2 files on the external drive and copied them over to the MacBook, then clicked 'Rebuild and Fix' to make sure the error messages disappeard and the Realtracks were correctly located.

Not very user-friendly, but doable (it took me a couple of hours). Is it worth it? Not if you have disk space to spare.

Good luck!

/Björn

Hi Bjorn,

That's getting close to the info I was after, cheers. Only thing is the real tracks and soloist files etc are currently on the USB drive that was sent to me. I can't actually go into any subfolders on this drive as it only enables me to install from it. Do I need to install the real tracks to ANOTHER hard drive again, and then copy from it?

Weird. I have no problem doing that. I right-click on the folders in the drive that was sent to me and I can drill all the way down to the individual .mp4 and .aif (Audiophile only).

The other thing I don’t understand is that, since you can download everything, why don’t you do so? All the files are available in your account (except the Audiophile edition — the .aif files are only found on the drive but they are still easily found and copied over).

It appears to me that you are more interested in the way you think the problem should be solved than in actually solving it — which is quite easy.

Hmm, well Mark, I just realised then that I needed to resize the window for the usb drive contents to reveal the hidden individual real tracks installers.
BUT, I still can't "drill down" past 3 mega and 4 pro folders. I don't know what's in each of them. Right clicking (setting track pad settings to secondary click) gets me no where. What the hell am I missing?

You should be able to show the package content of the installation files, as described for instance here:

Hi PrincePlanet,

If you have a MegaPAK, there isn't going to be a simple way to only install the material you want. You'll have to install the whole thing, and can delete whatever RealTracks you don't want once the installation is complete. You'll get error messages about files being missing, but the RealTracks you don't delete will still work.

Thanks
Kent
