I've thought about this for a while; but never really got into a conversation with anyone about this in person...let alone the number of people we would have on the forum. Are there any strange habits you have as a result of being a musician that non-musicians don't have? My example would be that I, being a drummer, typically will play all sorts of patterns in rhythm with my blinker sound while sitting at a red light. I'm not an "air drummer" really, just practicing patterns and making sure I stay in time with the blinker. One little thing that keeps it interesting is I am well aware that our vehicles blinkers are at different tempos.  I'm not sure if that common to many musicians? So, lay 'em on me. I've been curious about this for a while.

I've been curious about this for a while. Me too....and yes, I've done that also. One of my quirks (from likely a plethora of them) is I don't use odd numbered bpm tempos when I'm recording an original song....it has to be an even bpm number. I'm a bit odd that way. Oh...one more odd 'habit' I have as a musician: I'm never late to practice or a gig. I'm always on time....go figure. Back to topic....

I've been a lead guitarist for over 50 years.
I have an unusual habit, I guess you could call it. Before my wife's health deteriorated so horribly bad, we used to dance a lot. On slow songs, I would form the fingering pattern for the chords of the song on her back with my left hand. Everytime the song we were dancing to changed chords, I'd move my fingers on the back of her shoulder to emulate that new chord. I never realized I did that until she pointed it out to me. I guess that's a bit unusual.

PS: HTL - I'm not a drummer but I sometimes find myself playing the air drums on songs with a strong rhythm or that are percussion based. If nothing else, it makes the drivers in the cars near me wonder which issues I've been diagnosed with!

Before each mixing event I construct a complete aluminum foil suit (with helmet) to wear through the session. I've found that older ones are mostly ineffective so while it runs up the grocery costs it does, on occasion, result in a decent mix.  Now Janice finger taps out rhythms all the time...even for commercials and she wakes up hearing them. That's why I bought her a cajon last year that she was immediately able to play well.  Two of our recently licensed songs have her on cajon. Often she's not even aware of it although I am when my arm or leg is serving as the percussion instrument! Bud

That's interesting. Somehow, it doesn't surprise me. On certain programs I use I tend to have to have things exactly the same. If I have two tracks that are supposed to be the same. I can't have one at 87 and the other at 88...even though I can't tell the difference; aside from the darn number. So I understand. Back to topic.... For most people, not odd at all. For a musician...;)

Hey, it seems to be working; so don't change it. Now Janice finger taps out rhythms all the time...even for commercials and she wakes up hearing them. Bud I REALLY think you need to mic your arm and leg and have her play a few patterns, then use it in a song. You might be surprised how organic it could sound...you may think I'm kidding. I think it would be cool! Hear her sing, it doesn't suprise me she is very rhythmic. You can hear it in her singing. She has A LOT of control over where you places her melodies for effect. I noticed that RIGHT away.

What other profession would do that?
I'm in a fitness protection program. I'm been hiding from exercise.

I carry a guitar pick in my wallet. I carry my drumsticks there. It's pretty uncomfortable.  I have known other guitarists who did this. It never struck me as strange until just now when you mentioned it. I only know that because I saw them bring it out when we were at a music store. But, if I may ask, why do you? Sounds fascinating to me.

Sorry to disagree with you Mario; but I think that is REALLY normal for a musician. If there is ONE norm to us, THAT has got to be it. Strange would be getting paid $3000 for a gig you drove your $500 car 60 miles with $50 of equipment. If THAT happened; I think most musicians would think you to be a story teller; or blatant liar.  Now, that musicians are strange is a given. It's in our nature.

I carry a guitar pick in my wallet. Just checked my wallet: 9 picks (in the built-in zippered coin purse). 3 of the big Fender triangle bass picks, 4 dunlop max-grip 1.14mm, 1 dunlop nylon .38, one dunlop nylon .46 and one dunlop nylon .73 mm Just thinned the herd! But it does point out another weird habit I only buy wallets with coin purses built in.

I started as a drummer and I still play drums with my hands, analyzing rhythms or just having fun. It helps me write styles for BiaB.
Some people think the car has steering wheels, arm rests, side panels, and so on, I see bass drums, snares toms and so on.
Dozens of times a day when someone says a phrase a song with that phrase pops in my head and I'll start singing it. My wife is a musicians so she does the same thing. I try to control this when I'm with people I don't know well.
There is a song for just about everything.
I hear a line in a song, or the background music in a movie that reminds me of another song, if I don't immediately know what song they borrowed the lick from, myh subconscious will work on it until the other song just pops in my head -- perhaps 10 or 20 minutes later while I'm doing something else.
I'm having a conversation with someone, and even if I'm very interested in the conversation, if a song I like a lot comes on the radio or whatever, I have to fight to keep my attention on the conversation.
