Most keyboards I've seen have 61 or 72 keys so they are partial keyboards when compared to a standard keyboard. There should be a setting that lets you select which octaves you want the keyboard to play. Many times this action is performed by designating which key on the keyboard is middle C. That allows the partial keyboards to be able to play the whole range of a standard, 88 key, keyboard.

Some keyboards also have a transpose setting that shifts what midi notes are transmitted as compared to what keys you press on the keyboard.
