I notice that sometimes a backing track is saved as MGU and other times as SGU. Can I please ask what is the difference and whether there is any preference.

A MGU song file uses the melody track while a SGU song file has a blank melody track.
Let's say you have two "Farmer In The Dell" song files. If you want to play the song file that includes the melody then you would select farmer_in_the_dell.mgu. If you want to play the song file without the melody then select farmer_in_the_dell.sgu.

BIAB makes the choice. It's not something that users can do.
MGU means that there is midi notation recorded on either the Soloist or Melody tracks. In other, an MGU file has a melody associated with it (hence the "M"GU -- M = melody). The SGU, on the other hand, means that there is no melody... the file is a backing track with nothing on either the Melody or Soloist tracks. I'm not sure what "S" in SGU means but I'm guessing it's probably 'standard'.)

As long as you remember the M is for melody it doesn't really matter what the S is for .. Standard, Song Structure only, Solo (over it) version, or maybe it's a Secret ..

I pretty much create all my new songs as *.MGU. That way I will not have 2 versions down the road.
Any SGU song can be renamed to MGU in Windows Exploder.
Sometimes, when I know that I will be creating a melody later, I enter one random note into the melody. That way, BiaB will create the file as MGU automatically. Then I set the melody volume to zero.
