Well I broke down and bought a new Tascam recorder last week. I got it on sale with some discount for $380.00. I think very good price. It says to be a 24 track recorder that is true if using the 12 stereo tracks as stereo. If just mono then it is an 18 track recorder, still more that I need. Recording history, I started in 1991 buying a tascam midi studio, it was cassette and far better that me. I paid over 2000.00 for that, was looking at reel to reels at the time, Fostex Tascam, but went with the cassette version, I stunk at recording and finally sold it for what I paid in 92. Didnt buy another until I found a used Fostex 4 trac cassette recorder at a pawn shop for $100.00 in '94. Really learned to record, bounce etc on that machine. Then the digital thing with ADAT came out and I bought an 8 track ADAT and Mackie mixer. a couple of thousand also. later sold that and bought Roland vs880 ex. had that as my recorder for about 20 years till now. I have used computer recording some, but, I prefer the old style for tracking and then sending to the computer for mastering, burning down etc. I have to say this Tascam is just a great machine. 8 inputs, xlr and 1/4 inch guitar jack, phantom power, effects, and so simple to use. Anyone still wanting to record the old way should check these out. I am worried that these things may become a thing of the past, like me, and I got mine before that happened. Cliff

Hey Clifton, I had one of these in the 90's, a 424mkIII: From about 2000 onward, I've been strictly a PC user for recording. Hope you enjoy your new purchase! Good Luck!

Cliff, I had a Teac A-3400 reel to reel for a long time but never did record with it very much. I figured out how to record, bounce and how to use feedback to create echo but when you're a band of one and not a very good musician or singer recording quickly gets old.
I've had a Zoom MRS-8 digital recorder since 2007 and love it. The "MRS" stands for mobile recording studio and the name fits. The device is about the size of a book, has four stereo tracks, four mono tracks and two mastering tracks. It has a built-in, programmable drum and bass machine with 345 per-programmed patterns and room for about 200 user patterns. There is a parallel bus for reverb and delay. Best of all though are the algorithms that create signal chains. There are nine groups and each group has almost 100 variations!
My wife found a factory refurbished unit for $138 and bout it as a birthday gift. A few years later she bought Band-in-a-Box as a Christmas gift. I am a very lucky man! With those two gifts I've been able to explore music production and have fun with music.
Good luck with your Tascam recorder. Like you I much prefer using a dedicated recorder versus recording on a computer. My brother has a slightly different version and it is an impressive machine.

I have the original version DP-24 that has the CD drive and midi inputs. Other than those feature differences, my unit is functionally the same as yours. There is an excellent and very thorough tutorial on YouTube by a fellow named Phil Tipping. I believe it is a series of 12 videos. It takes you through the unit as both a stand alone mixer and then as a recorder. I also recommend tutorials by ProaudioDVD's owned by David Wills and their product is approved by Tascam. Between those two products, you will understand the unit inside/out.
I am a big fan of Tascam recording equipment and the DP-24 in particular. I had the predecessor 2488neo and portastudios back to the 80's and 90's like you and have had a home recording studio of one form or the other continuously since 1968.
I've never suffered a crash or lost a file to corruption in any of the Tascam units I've owned over the years and it is very quick to be up and recording as compared to a PC/Mac and DAW. Don't be afraid of the Fx included with DP-24/32. They are basic but they compare very well with most VST's.
Enjoy your new unit and I hope you share some of your music with us here on the forum.

I use a tascam dp006 for ideas, backing tracks and makeshift captures of live events. It's battery powered and most reliable and robust. So good for transport and ease of use in a performance.
I would check out their other products should I be looking for anything else. It's what they do.
Using: Dell 3268 i3, 8 GB ram, windows 10. Biab version 2017 standard package, no extras.

You are right about that Duncan, the first Tascam, 688 midistudio was 8 track on cassette, it was far too advanced for me at the time. Tascam is tops at making recording equipment. Cliff

Before Gibson Brands took over Tascam, I moderated the 788 and 2488 sub forums at Tascamforums.com. One thing I liked to point is that the 788 and the various 24’s are capable of 999 tracks in a project and even though the mixer channels above 12 are stereo channels, you can place 2 of your 999 tracks on those channels during mix down. They can be 2 mono tracks if you want, or you can bounce several tracks to stereo to give you single fader control over a bounced stereo mix at final mix down.

Thanks for the info Kieth, I forget about the virtual tracks available, and good to know that I can put 2 tracks on the stereo tracks during mixdown. It is a great little unit, like everything the more I use it the more I can do. Cliff

And unlike the old analog bouncing, all the bouncing in the 2488 and DP series is digital so the audio doesn't degrade with each of the bounce downs.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
