Ok Jazz people don't laugh at me but I have a question.
I just completed a jazz composition "to order" and they wanted it it to sound "weird" like the theme song to Ocean's Eleven.
I had it in Eb with a cool groove and I was playing a virtual Rhodes and virtual B3 on a synth with the transpose function on playing in C. But no matter what I did I could not get it to sound weird.
THEN, I kept the bass and a few other parts in Eb but (transposed on the keyboard mind you) started playing nothing but black keys and it sounded great--spooky, but not dissonant at all. And totally grooving. So I obviously have two different keys playing against one another but it still works--quite well, in fact. Half the instruments in one key, half in another.
Does any jazz maestro know what this is called, or it is just called crazy???

There are only 5 black keys, so they're a gapped pentatonic scale. So you can look at them as being a scale missing some key notes. Which scale you consider it to be depends on root note of the scale. That Eb pentatonic scale - Eb Gb Ab Bb Db - functionally an Ebmin7 - is basically an Eb blues scale, contrasting the minor flavor of the scale against the major scale of the harmony. Which, as you said, sounds pretty cool.

different keys share the same notes so if it works, .... it works.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Bud,
I have a friend in LA I write with (electronica) and he will send me a chord sheet and the first chord will always be something like F#Mm7/Db#11add9b5.
And I am always like:
You're kidding right?
But--he's not.
So, I feel your pain man.
What's wrong with G, C and D????

Herb, When I was playing in New York, my friends and I used to so some songs in a genre we called "Bogus Jazz" and we would play the stupidest stuff you ever heard. Wandering aimlessly all over the bass, playing guitar and piano parts that made absolutely no sense whatsoever, but all with a straight and earnest face, like we were Julliard grads and totally into it. It was pretty hysterical, actually. Maybe I should get back to that and put out a "New Bogus Jazz" album this year if anyone wants to join me.
